Title: Study Reveals that Dual Mobility Hip Replacement Reduces Dislocation Risk
1Study Reveals that Dual Mobility Hip Replacement
Reduces Dislocation Risk Hip Replacement
surgery is a medical surgery in which the surgeon
takes out the painful or defected hip joint and
switches it with an artificial joint that is
often made from plastic and metal constituents.
Every year, thousands of patients undergo total
hip replacement surgery in India. While
typically, it is a successful procedure, every
surgery is associated with some sort of
complications. With hip replacements, dislocation
is the primary complication that results in the
number of revision procedures that are expensive.
However, a dual mobility hip replacement
procedure has significantly improved the level of
risk associated with the surgery. According to
Geoffrey Westrich, MD and Research Director of
the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement
Service at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS),
patients who have gone through dual mobility hip
replacement were found to have no complication
of dislocation. On the other hand, a lot of
patients who have undergone traditional hip
replacement procedure had to undergo a revision
procedure to rectify the dislocation. The
Concept of Dual Mobility Hip Replacement Dual
Mobility Cups consist of two articulation points
one is located between the shell and external
bearing (polyethylene) and the other between
polyethylene and the internal bearing, femoral
head. The movement stimulates at the femoral head
or inner bearing whereas the polyethylene or
outer bearing, only moves during extreme
maneuvers. Dislocation after total hip
arthroplasty surgery is a result of extreme
indisposition and treating it is an expensive
affair. However, with dual mobility cups, the
patients get higher movement range, thus
reducing the risk of dislocation and expense of
revision procedures. Dr. Westrich explained that
a large polyethylene plastic head is inserted in
a polished metal hip socket and an
2additional ceramic head or smaller metal is
fitted within the polyethylene head. With two
areas of motion available, there is an improved
range of movement for the patient.
- Benefits of Dual Mobility Hip Replacement
- Safe Movement With dual mobility total hip
replacement, patients are more capable of
getting a greater and safer movement range as
compared to traditional hip replacement. - Increased Movements It allows the patients to
perform high movement activity like running,
skiing, jumping, etc. without having to worry
about the risk of dislocation. - Faster Recovery Dual mobility hip replacement
procedure allows the patients to leave the
hospital within 2-4 days of the surgery.
Depending on the health condition, only certain
patients are retained for the hydrotherapy. - After extensive research, surgeons have found
that patients who have undergone dual mobility
hip replacement surgery had no complication
related to dislocations. Whereas, for the group
of people who went for traditional total hip
arthroplasty treatment, around 5.1 had to
endure revision surgery. Conclusively, doctors
explain that hip replacement surgeries are
largely performed on young patients and with an
active lifestyle, they require a more reliable
solution than standard hip replacement procedure.
With dual mobility hip replacement, people are
now less concerned about complications related to
dislocations and are able to perform regular
activities just like any other healthy person
would.
