  •
  • SOC 308 Week 1 DQ 1 Constructing Race
  • Constructing Race. Review the PBS website RACE
The Power of an Illusion as you prepare for this
discussion. This site offers many examples of how
the science of human difference contradicts
    ordinary ideas of race.
  • As we see in the readings and in this website,
race is socially constructed, a system of thought
and human behavior not directly based on nature,
instead resulting from social ideas and
practices. In other words, race exists because
people believe it is real and important.
  • Please respond to the following
  • a. How has race been constructed in the United
    States?
  • b. Provide a specific example of how race
    continues to be socially constructed.
  • c. What groups are harmed, and benefit, from
    these constructions of race?

  • Implications of Anglo Dominance in the United
States. Please respond to the following
  • Since the European settlement of North America,
white, Anglo Americans have dominated the
political landscape. Define, in your own words,
Anglo dominance and describe how Anglos built and
have maintained said dominant system. Assess
whether or not Anglos will continue to dominate
the political landscape in the United States and
what changes are necessary to establish a more
    equitable sharing of power.

  • Legacy of Slavery. Listen to or read Dr. Kings
speech, I Have a Dream. Then, respond to the
    following
  • Dr. Kings famous speech envisions a future in
which the racial distinction established by
slavery and segregation is no more. Evaluate the
ways in which the legacy of slavery has prevented
the United States from building a more just
society, supporting your evaluation with the
    textbook and additional sources.
  • Define what Dr. Kings refrain, free at last,
looks like to you and how our society will need
to change in order to achieve it

  •
  • Hispanic Culture. Please review the following
sources in preparation for this discussion.
  • a. The Border
  • b. Hispanic Americans Exhibitions and
    Presentations
  • c. History of US-Mexico Relations
  • Based on your review of at least one of the above
sources, define and discuss the historic incident
or aspect of culture that you find most
interesting or have observed in your community
and, using examples, demonstrate why it is
relevant to the impact of Hispanic culture in the
    United States.

SOC 308 Week 2 Ethnic Group Evaluation (Ash)

  •
  • Ethnic Group Evaluation. Please review Chapters 5
through 9 of Race and Ethnicity as you prepare
    for this assignment.
  • By the mid-twentieth century, European immigrant
groups described in Week One had combined to form
a white racial majority in the United States.
    Today, Blacks, Native Americans, Asians,
Hispanics, and non-white Europeans interact with
the white majority in a system of race that can
be broadly described as comprising whites and
non-whites, whites and racial minorities, or
whites and people of color. While unique ethnic
groups share a culture in which ethnic conflict
is present, including pressures to assimilate,
the broader culture also celebrates the unique
culture of many ethnic groups in America.

Language (Ash)

  •
  • English as the Official U.S. Language. Please
visit Poll Should English Be the United States
Official Language? as you prepare for this
discussion and participate in the poll.
  • After reading the argument for making English the
official language of the United States and
participating in the poll, assess the merit of
this argument in context with the results of the
poll. Why is this argument valid / invalid and
how would establishing an official language
    affect the status quo?

SOC 308 Week 3 DQ 2 Hate Crime (Ash)

  • Hate Crime. Please visit Hate Crime Statistics,
2009 as you prepare for this discussion. Click
through the Hate Crimes website, following your
    curiosity.
  • Based on the information you gleaned from the FBI
website above, discuss a statistic, study, or
other fact that surprised you or has affected
your community and what the numbers say about
offenses against this specific protected class.
What do these crimes say about our society and
what steps need to be taken to prevent them?

  •
  • Final Paper Problem and Outline. To prepare for
your Final Paper, review the Final Paper
instructions in Week Five of your online course
or in the Components of Course Evaluation
section of this guide. Then, complete the
following written assignment and submit it for
feedback from your instructor. The paper must be
formatted according to APA style and include a
title and a reference page. For information
regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the
Ashford Writing Center, within the Learning
Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar, in
    your online course.
  • Proposal
  • Describe the society selected for your paper.
This could be a nation, other than the U.S., or
possibly a large ethnic group within another
country. Discuss why you believe this is an
appropriate topic for your Final Paper.

SOC 308 Week 4 DQ 1 The Caste System in India

  •
  • The Caste System in India. Please watch Prof.
MriduRai Caste system in India or read The Caste
System Effects on Poverty in India, Nepal and
Sri Lanka. Then, compare Indias caste system
with racial/ethnic stratification in the United
States. What are the similarities and how do the
differences create the potential for upward
mobility in the U.S.? Based on your review of the
video, why does the caste system remain so
    powerful in India?

16
SOC 308 Week 4 DQ 2 The Cosmic Race (Ash)
  • FOR MORE CLASSES VISIT
  • www.soc308mart.com
  •
  •
  • The Cosmic Race. Jose Vasconcelos proposed the
assimilation of ethnic groups in Mexico into a
new "cosmic race." This concept is discussed in
the readings as well as in The Cosmic Race. More
information can be found with a web search.
  • After reviewing your text, the linked document
above, and others found in your web search,
describe what Jose Vasconcelos means by a cosmic
race and then evaluate the cultural ramifications
of this idea. Compare this evaluation with the
melting pot ideal of the US. Use these two
examples to infer the role of national or
cultural identity to a given society.

  •
  • Northern Ireland. English involvement in Ireland
dates back to 1171, when English King, Henry II
invaded the island to expand his empire. Since
then, politics in the region has been
characterized by varying degrees of tension
between Irish independence and British rule. This
tension has often flared into violent conflict.
As in other global situations, what might be more
accurately described as a political and economic
conflict has become an ethnic conflict, with
opposing groups unified around cultural and
    religious identities.
  • Please respond to the following
  • a. In your informed opinion, what events led to
the peace agreements immediately preceding the
    current state of harmony?

  • Final Paper
  • A sociologist must be able to analyze racial and
    ethnic differences in different national
contexts. For example, in the U.S., we tend to
think of race in a particular way. In order to
develop this skill, select and analyze a society
    demonstrating ethnic stratification and conflict,
    including evidence of prejudice and
discrimination. In addition to a description of
the selected society, include an analysis of
similarities and differences as compared to the
    United States.
  • While the following example can be modified to
suit your needs, this outline is likely to result
in a high quality Final Paper
