  • When an accident occurs, to ensure whether
    someone is alive or not, the first thing that is
    tested is whether they are breathing, then their
    heartbeat and pulse are checked. That is indeed
    how essential breathing is to the functioning of
    the human body. Sadly, though, the environment
    around us, especially in urban areas, is not
    conducive for the healthy functioning of our
    lungs.

  • Almost 50 of Indians are currently suffering
    from breathing problems. These problems have
    arisen due to a lot of factors like-increased
    pollution levels, smoking etc. Diseases like
    Asthma, COPD, sinus, bronchitis, have been on the
    rise. All this makes it imperative that you
    become aware of and practise the right form of
    breathing correctly. This can actually remove
    most of your problems Here's a list of things
    that you can practice to ensure a healthy
    breathing life.

1) Breathing exercises
  • You may not be aware but practising certain
    breathing exercises regularly can make a
    difference to your general health. Follow these
    tips
  • Breathing in through your nose and breathing out
    slowly from your mouth can help you remove
    impurities entering your system. You should never
    breathe out quickly.This exercise can be
    practiced regularly whenever you feel a shortness
    of breath.
  • Learning to cough properly - A lot of times a
    great amount of mucus is stuck deep in your lungs
    which makes it difficult for you to breathe. It
    is important you loosen your muscles and take out
    all the extra mucus from your lungs.
  • Belly breathing - This is a way to calm yourself
    whenever you feel shortness of breath. By keeping
    one hand on your nose and the other on the belly,
    you can easily do this exercise, all you have to
    ensure is that when you are breathing in, your
    stomach pushes forward and then gently push your
    belly when breathing out to take maximum air out.

2) Diet
  • Apart from these breathing exercises, following a
    proper diet. People suffering from asthma should
    follow basic guidelines on diet to ensure that
    their breathing problems are not aggravated.
  • Vitamin D - It is usually seen that Asthma
    patients are deficient in Vitamin D. Therefore to
    replenish the levels of this vitamin the diet
    should contain more eggs, fish, mushrooms and
    milk products. Soaking up some sunlight can also
    increase Vitamin D levels.
  • Fruits and Vegetables - Green, leafy vegetables
    and fruits contain lots of Vitamin C and E.Eating
    these can go a long way in ensuring less
    irritation and swelling in your throats.

  • Ginger juice mixed with honey and warm water can
    work wonders. Massaging with hot mustard oil also
    help you breathe better.
  • All our small and niggling health problems can be
    solved in over time by making small changes in
    our lifestyles. These respiratory tips can go a
    long way in keeping your breathing healthy.
