Developments of new software that will auto
calibrate a model for Building Energy Simulation
and Optimization is in the pipeline.
3
The project is undertaken by researchers - US
dept of Energy at ORNL (Oak Ridge National
Laboratory).
4
Developing Energy efficient buildings has become
the need of the hour - green building design is
extremely important due to the depleting energy
resources and the rate at which overall emissions
are growing worldwide.
5
A recent research suggested that in US alone,
building owners spend approx 400 billion on
energy.
6

Autoune for Easier Model Energy
7
The buildings in US consume nearly 41 of the
total energy consumption across the nation, and
are responsible for emitting nearly 40 of CO2
emissions.
8
In order to curb the wastage of energy, to
reduce the utility bills and reduce carbon
footprints and have an overall positive impact on
the environ it is very important to develop tools
and technologies for energy simulation, analysis
and sustainability optimization.
9
Development of software that enables
automatic calibration of models for building
energy simulation is a step towards this
direction.
10
In order to estimate, predict and further make
design changes for energy improvements in the
existing building, is possible via BEM, i.e.
building energy modeling.
11
The Department of energy at ORNL, has proposed
a whole building energy simulation tool, that
estimates the energy consumption based on weather
data and based on the variety of input parameters
related to HVAC systems, water heating, lighting,
occupancy schedules etc.

14
This process can be time consuming and
complex. One of the leading researchers at ORNL,
Jibonanada Sanyal said, Currently, the biggest
barrier is the cost of getting an accurate model
of the pre-retrofit building because it requires
hiring an expert

15
It is touted that the Autotune software will
make energy simulation in building design rapid
and proffer reduced green building costs and
financial benefits to stake holders.

16
Once the software is developed and ready for
the market, one of the prime focus will be to
collaborate with universities and the industry
segments where energy modeling is an integral
part of building design, and help these sectors
make automated calibration an integral part of
their design approach.
17
During the process of this software
development, developers used extremely powerful
technologies to address all the possibilities.
ORNLs 27-petaflop Titan supercomputer and the
National Institute for Computational Sciences
Nautilus system was used for conducting
simulations of several buildings and to run
simulations for a half million buildings, in less
than an hour, generating data of around hundreds
of terabytes.
18
More than 150 important parameters that play a
major role in reducing computational loads and
enabling higher degree of accuracy were
identified, and machine learning algorithms were
developed.
19
Finally, when the software was tested, it was
found that the fully automated calibration
process, allowed very less acope for errors, i.e.
below one percent in all the building types that
were tested.
20
Besides, the developers propose that the model
calibration using autotune will not only be
precise, but also speedy and less costly as
compared to manual calibration. The developers
are said to release the software and make it
publicly available in September 2015.
