3
STAND BY YOUR LINES
  • Man the lines, ready to cast off or let go.

4
LET GO, OR LET GO ALL LINES
  • Slack off smartly to permit those tending lines
on the pier or another ship to cast off.

5
SEND THE LINES OVER
  • Pass the lines to the pier, place the eye over
the appropriate bollard, but take no strain.

6
TAKE LINE (ONE, TWO, ETC.) TO THE CAPSTAN
  • Lead the end of the designated line to the
capstan, take the slack out of the line, but take
    no strain.

8
HEAVE AROUND ON LINE (ONE, TWO, ETC.)
  • Apply tension on the line with the capstan.

9
AVAST HEAVING
  • Stop the capstan.

10
HOLD WHAT YOUVE GOT
  • Hold the line as it is.

11
HOLD
  • Do not allow any more line to go out.
  • CAUTION
  • This risks parting the line!

12
CHECK
  • Hold heavy tension on line, but render it (let it
slip) as necessary to prevent parting the line.

13
SURGE
  • 1. Hold moderate tension on the line, but render
it enough to permit movement of the ship.
  • 2. This is used when moving along the pier to
    adjust position.

14
DOUBLE UP
  • Pass an additional bight on all mooring lines
from the ship to the shore so that there are
three parts of each mooring line fastened to the
pier instead of only one part of each line.

15
SINGLE UP
  • Take in all bights and extra lines so that there
remains only a single part of each of the normal
    mooring lines.

16
CAST OFF ALL LINE
  • 1. Used when secured with another ships lines
    in a nest.
  • 2. Cast off the ends of the lines and allow the
other ship to retrieve her lines.

17
SHIFT
  • 1. Used when moving a line along a pier.
  • 2. Followed by a designation of which line and
    where it is to go
  • a. Shift number three from the bollard to the
