Title: US LHC Software and Computing Review

1
US LHC Software and Computing Review
  • Introduction Day 1
  • Glen Crawford
  • DOE/NSF LHC Program Office

2
Outline
  • A brief review of Reviews
  • What this review is
  • What this review isnt
  • Review procedures
  • Charge to Committee

3
A Brief Review of Reviews
  • DOE/NSF ad hoc peer reviews of US LHC software
    and computing started c. 1998
  • Provided periodic input to agencies before formal
    beginning of SC Projects
  • Most recent Jan. 2000 _at_ DOE
  • Also CERN Management Review of LHC Computing
    (Hoffmann Review) in 2000
  • This week US Baseline Review

4
What this review is
  • A critical evaluation of scope, cost, schedule,
    and project management
  • Establishment of near-term project baselines in
    these areas
  • An important input to FY2001-2 budgets
  • The beginning of a regular, systematic review
    process (a la LHC Detectors)

5
What this review isnt
  • An attempt to set long-term project
    baselinesmany things will change
  • A construction project Lehman Review
  • What are the right metrics?
  • An exercise in herding cats
  • HEP Computing is on the radar screen

6
The Review Committee
  • Bruce Allen, U. Wisc.
  • Joel Butler, Fermilab
  • Aesook Byon-Wagner, Fermilab
  • Pat Dreher, MIT/LNS
  • Michael Ernst, DESY
  • John Reynders, Sun
  • Terry Schalk, UCSC
  • Marjorie Shapiro, UC Berkeley/LBNL
  • Michael Tuts, Columbia Univ.
  • Chip Watson, TJNAF
  • Glen Crawford, DOE, Chair

7
Review Procedures
  • Overview sessions today, Wed, Thurs.
  • Breakout sessions software, facilities, project
    management (ATLAS/CMS)
  • Subcommittees tailored to breakouts
  • Closeouts CMS (Wed), ATLAS (Fri)
  • Administrative Andreene Witt 1-37 Jackie
    Mooney 1-45

8
Charge to Review Committee
  • we are requesting a detailed technical, cost,
schedule and management review of only the
near-term project efforts, up through Fiscal Year
2002. However, the review committee should make
its best effort to gauge whether these near-term
efforts can reasonably be extrapolated to the
    long-term requirements.

9
Charge to Review Committee II
  • The charge for this reviewisto assess
  • Overall strategy and scope of US LHC SC
  • US contributions to core and detector-specific
    software deliverables
  • Function, scope structure of national
  • US LHC computing facilities (Tier 1)
  • Other aspects of computing structure (e.g.,
    Tier 2, grid computing, networking)

10
Charge to Review Committee III
  • Plans for providing computing resources to users
and success in integrating them into the software
    development process
  • Existing and possible common projects
  • Project Management Plans, org. structures, and
adequacy of personnel to pull off the whole
    enchilada

11
Summary
  • This review will establish project baselines for
    US LHC software and computing
  • We will employ project management tools but we
    realize SC projects are different
  • This is a learning process
  • Failure is not an option.
  • Comments and suggestions are welcome!
