The Sacraments
  • Curriculum Resources
  • And
  • The Sacraments of Initiation

21
The Sacramental Principle
  • John 1415-18 If you love me you will keep my
commandments. And I will pray to the Father, and
he will give you another Counsellor, to be with
you for ever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it neither sees him
nor knows him you know him, for he dwells with
you, and will be in you. I will not leave you
desolate I will come to you.

22
What is a Sacrament?
  • 1. A Sacred sign
  • 2. Instituted by Christ (directly or indirectly)
  • 3. To give grace
  • 4. Entrusted to the Church (CCC 1131)

23
A Sacred Sign
  • Most signs give directions. Point to
    something else
  • Sacraments are signs that actually do
    what they indicate i.e.
  • Efficacious signs
  • which also instruct

24
ANOTHER DEFINITION
  • An external visible sign of an Eternal
    invisible reality.

25
  • BAPTISM
  • Water, the visible sign is poured.
  • The Words N. I baptize you in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
    Amen.
  • The invisible reality that is taking place is
that the Holy Spirit is being poured into the
persons soul. The Trinity is taking up
residence within the person being baptized in the
person of Gods Love, The Holy Spirit.

26
TO GIVE GRACE
  • Grace is the undeserved gift of God. It is the
Love of the Father and the Son poured forth into
    the recipient of the Sacrament

28
The Purpose of the Sacraments is
  • 1) To sanctify humankind
  • 2) To build up the Body of Christ
  • 3) To give worship to God. (CCC 1123)

29
Instituted by Christ(directly or indirectly)
  • It is instituted by Christ and is His action.
Christ is not only present as the origin of the
sacrament two thousand years ago, but, is really
present and active in them now. Thus the
sacraments do not merely signify grace but they
actually give grace. He is active in each
sacrament in order to communicate the grace which
    each signifies

30
  • This has to do with the fact that
  • Christ is eternal, dwelling in the now.
  • He has no past, He has no future, He is now.
  • I AM

31
  • I The Sacraments of Initiation Baptism,
    Confirmation and Eucharist
  • 2 The Sacraments of Healing Reconciliation
(confession) and The Sacrament of the Sick.
  • 3 The Sacraments of Service Matrimony and Holy
    Orders diaconate, priesthood, episcopacy
    (bishop)

32
Baptism
33
Baptism
  • Sacred Sign
  • Pouring of Water
  • 2) Instituted by Christ (and entrusted to the
    Church)
  • Matthew 2819 Go therefore and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and the son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I commanded
you and I am with you always, even to the end of
    the age.
  • To give Grace
  • A) Washing clean of original sin and personal
    sin
  • B) Becoming an adoptive son/daughter of God
  • C) Becoming a member of the Body of Christ, the
Church and thus sharers in the Churchs mission.

34
Indelible mark
  • CCC 1304
  • Baptism and Confirmation (and Holy Orders) are
given only once, for they imprint on the soul an
indelible spiritual mark, the character, which
is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a
Christian with the seal of His Spirit by clothing
the Christian with power from on high so they may
    be His witnesses.

35
Duties and responsibilities that come with being
a recipient of the Sacraments.
  • CCC 1270
  • Reborn as sons/daughters of God, the baptized
must profess before all humankind the faith they
have received from God through the Church and
participate in the apostolic and missionary
activity of the People of God.

36
Is baptism necessary for salvation?
  • 1) Baptism is necessary for salvation. The Lord
himself affirms this John 35 Truly, truly, I
say to you, unless one is born of water and the
Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
  • Sacramental baptism is not the only kind of
    baptism
  • 2) Baptism of blood
  • 3) The Baptism of desire
  • 4) Baptism of implicit desire. Every one who is
ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his
Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of
God in accordance with his understanding of it,
    can be saved.
  • 5) unbaptized infants

37
WHO CAN BAPTIZE?
  • 1) Normally it is a bishop, priest or deacon
  • 2) Special circumstances. Anyone can baptize
as long as they are doing what the Church intends
and they pour water and use the words N. I
baptize you in the name of the Father and the
    Son and the Holy Spirit.

38
Why do we have the Sacraments at all?
  • Baptism restores our likeness to Christ
  • Other Sacraments either strengthen us
or restore us to that baptismal state.
  • Eucharist and Confirmation strengthen for
    daily life in Christ
  • Reconciliation (Confession) and The
Sacrament of the Sick restore baptismal state
    when lost
  • Holy Marriage and Holy Orders gives special
graces to live that particular vocation.

39
Baptismal Liturgy
  • Prayer while clothing with the White Garment
  • N. , you have become a new creation, and have
clothed yourselves in Christ. See in this white
garment the outward sign of your Christian
dignity. With your family and friends to help you
by word and example, bring that dignity unstained
into the everlasting life of heaven.

40
Baptismal Liturgy
  • While giving the Lighted Candle
  • Receive the Light of Christ. Parents and
Godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be
kept burning brightly. These children of yours
have been enlightened by Christ. They are to
walk always as children of the light. May they
keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts.
When the Lord comes, may they go out to meet him
with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.
