Title: Global Certificates: Human Resources and Immigration Programs that Work Together
1Global Certificates Human Resources and
Immigration Programs that Work Together
- Tammy Lyskowinski
- The University of Georgia
- Robbin Fulmore
- Old Dominion University
2What is a Global Certificate Program?
- A training program that is geared towards all
faculty and staff that focuses on cultural
competency - The program offers workshops on the issues and
skills relevant to serving international students
and scholars - Through the program participants can earn a
certificate that demonstrates their understanding
of serving our global community
3Reason for Session
- We wanted to share the program idea as well as
the logistics of starting it from scratch - Show how to make needed immigration training a
springboard for campus cultural change - Have you rethink current faculty and staff
training on your campus - Remind you that creating a certificate program
legitimates the training and gives people a
vested interested in taking the classes - Your campus may already have a training program
set up for management training, payroll issues,
etc. make use of it!
4History of Program at ODU
- Began in 1998
- Purpose to educate campus community
- Became part of Universitys training program.
5Current Model at ODU
- Created each spring for the following academic
year - Human Resources registration and tracking
- Certificates and awards ceremony
6History of Faculty and Staff Training at UGA
- Day long (8 hours!!) training sessions that
covered all visa categories - Too much information given at once
- Boring!
- Participants had to sit through information that
didnt apply to them - Only taught about visa categories and how to
complete forms, no intercultural component was
included
7A New Type of Training
- Researched how other institutions handled staff
training on immigration issues and cultural
issues - Found very few comprehensive programs (ex
immigration and cultural competency based in the
campus training center) - Spoke with Robbin and she pointed me to the Old
Dominion web site
8Making Change Happen
- After some research I contacted a colleague in
our Training and Development Department to see if
there was interest - Created a proposal and sent it to my boss
(Included in handouts) - Met one on one with Provost
- Met with TD and discussed feasibility, tracking,
and logistics. Since they already offer other
certificate programs the system was already in
place- only the classes were needed
9Marketing The Idea
- Teachers
- Core class
- Electives
- Comprehensive?
- Expansion?
10Curriculum Development
- Once I had the teachers I created the curriculum
based on their specialties - Followed the ODU model very closely but tailored
it to UGAs needs - Certificate requirements (I core 4 electives)
- Set up guidelines about courses never teach
more than 2 or 3 in one term. I want it to take
one year for them to obtain certificate so that
global issues remain in their mind for an
extended amount of time - Set up one year of courses
11Core Class General Global Competencies
- As the major course requirement for the Global
Certificate Program, the General Global
Competencies course will include the following
(1) a brief history of international education in
the United States (2) a discussion and review of
current trends and issues within Higher Education
concerning international visitors and students in
other countries as well as the United States (3)
benefits of hosting internationals in the U.S.
and on our campuses (4) a brief description of
the UGA international population including
international needs as well as assumptions and
expectations of this population. The core course
is designed to be interactive and
discussion-oriented and will also provide a
general foundation for the remaining electives
for the Global Competencies Certificate program. - .
12Core Class
- Course Objectives
- Participants will gain a greater understanding of
serving the global community at UGA as well as
gain cultural competency. - Participants will also understand the
difficulties internationals face in coming to the
U.S. - Participants in this seminar will be better
prepared to complete the process of gaining
certification for the Global Certificate Program
offered by the University of Georgia. - Target Audience
- The target audience for this course should
include but is not limited to University of
Georgia faculty and staff who work with
internationals on campus and/or individuals who
are interested in gaining a greater understanding
of foreign students, scholars and visitors hosted
by the University of Georgia. - Course Length
