Protection and enhancement of local breeds and
varieties of interest to farming, animal
husbandry and forestry
16GMO free regions, biodiversity and rural
development in Europe
- Aims of the new Regional Bill
- To preserve and protect the heritage of local
breeds and varieties from an economic, scientific
and social point of view - All local breeds and varieties belong to the
natural heritage of interest to farming, animal
husbandry and forestry in Tuscany. - The Region of Tuscany promotes and guarantees the
collective use of the local breeds and varieties
through the conservation and security network.

Regional Germplasm Bank
- This is defined for the first time in the Tuscan
Regional Bill as an extended concept with respect
to the current one, and is conceived as a
"system". - It is the central unit for all the accessions
listed in the Regional Repertories. - It carries out all the operations necessary for
guaranteeing conservation ex situ.
19GMO free regions, biodiversity and rural
development in Europe
Growers and custodians
- The growers and custodians carry out a function
with a public interest and are responsible for - conservation on-farm of the germplasm at risk of
extinction listed in the Regional Repertories - dissemination of knowledge and know-how of the
varieties for which they are the custodians. - ATTENTION with the new Regional Bill the grower
keeps all the Repertory accessions on-farm,
including ligneous fruit species, ornamental and
flower species, and species of forestry interest.

Conservation and security network of the
autochthonous genetic resources
Connecting structure between the various
subjects, including the Growers and Custodians
and the Regional Germplasm Bank, with the task of
keeping the natural heritage of a farming and
forestry interest alive in Tuscany. For this
purpose it is authorised to exchange sufficient
quantities of propagation material within the
network, which are nevertheless limited in order
to guarantee a lasting use of the germplasm.

development in Europe
Regional Register of the varieties for
conservation
- This allows for marketing the varieties for
conservation listed in the repertories that are
currently not included in the commercial
circuits. - The production and marketing of the seeds of the
varieties for conservation must be subjected to
quantitative restrictions for each variety.

Mark
A regional, facultative mark will inform
consumers that the produce bearing this
identification derives from local varieties at
risk of extinction.
