Improving Water and Sanitation in Quelimane City,
Mozambique
Slum Upgrading
Sub-Saharan Africa Mozambique
Quelimane City, located along the Cuácua River,
suffers from cyclical floods. Building on an
earlier Alliance activity in the city, and linked
to an investment by the European Commission (1.5
million), this proposal will create the
conditions for comprehensive citywide slum
upgrading, introducing innovative mechanisms for
improved water and sanitation conditions.
Summary
Activities
Objectives
(i) Create adequate conditions and strengthen the
capacity of the City Council and of the community
in water and sanitation and slum upgrading
projects (ii) Plan and implement activities for
improving drainage and road systems efficiency
(iii) Identify, test and apply sustainable
solutions to facilitate access to safe drinking
water (iv) Reduce sanitation risks by proposing
innovative technology and improving hygienic
conditions and (v) Set up an effective waste
management system.

Expected Impact and Results
(i) City Councils capacity to intervene
effectively in urban slums reinforced (ii)
Sustainable and participatory mechanisms put in
place for citywide upgrading (iii) Interlinked
issues of water, sanitation, drainage, roads and
waste management addressed in an integrated and
consistent manner in Quelimane, resulting in a
significant improvement in the living conditions
of slum dwellers (iv) A simple and effective
slum upgrading strategy implemented, which can be
easily replicated in other Municipalities and
potentially institutionalised in Government
policies.
