Perseus clipboard icon. When directed to the
Perseus main page, click Create a new

stating New Blank Questionnaire followed by

4
A Few Design Notes
  • Survey questions should be created and finalized
    prior to starting Perseus.
  • Perseus looks and operates similar to a
  • Microsoft Word document

5
Design Notes Continued
  • To use formatting as in word, certain functions,
  • such as alignments, must be added to the
  • toolbar by first clicking View at the top
  • of the screen, then Toolbars, followed by
  • clicking the Command tab. Click Format
  • from the list on the left. Then choose the
  • functions desired, and click and drag to drop
  • them, one at a time, into the existing toolbar.

Getting Started
You can begin by typing in the name and
instructions for your survey just like you would
in a word processor.
8
Selecting the type of question
  • There are 5 types of questions that Perseus
    allows you to ask.
  • Choose One- The respondent can choose only one
item from a list of options (represented by
    )
  • Choose Many- The respondent can choose multiple
items from a list of options (represented by
    )
  • Choose One Per Topic- The respondent uses a scale
to rate a list of topics (represented by )
  • Fill in the Blank- The respondent types in
one-line answers for a list of topics, or to a
question. It can also be used for certain custom
    or prearranged dropdown choice lists.

  • Essay Question-The respondent can write sentences
or paragraphs in the response space provided.

Using The Question Wizard
We recommend using the Question Wizard to write
each question. Click on this icon to begin.
When asked for the heading, enter the question
number here. Perseus automatically follows the
entry with a period.
10
Question Wizard Continued
Enter the question text that you have prepared in
advance. Click on the Next button to continue.
11
Selecting A Response Item
Select the most appropriate response option from
the list, Choose One in this case, then click
Next.
12
Choose One
To enter choices for selection, type each one on
a separate line in the text box, then click
Next. On the screen that follows, click
Finish.
13
Errors to Avoid
  • Be sure to insert spaces between each question.

Make sure there no extra choice spaces are left
behind your question when you insert a space.
14
Choose Many
Note the outline of your questionnaire.
Choose Many is created in the same format as
Choose One, only the question is formatted so
that more than one option may be selected.
15
One per topic
Select the scale you would like to use to rate
the aspects being scored in this question, then
click Next. Then enter the items to be rated in
the same manner as for the Choose One and
Choose Many questions, one per line.
16
Creating A Custom Scale
Depending on the wording of your One per Topic
question, it may call for a custom scale. To
create a custom scale, click Custom Text Scale,
then Next. On the following screen enter the
scale you would like to use with one category per
line.
On the next screen, you will enter the categories
to be rated, just as you did with a provided
scale.
17
Questionnaire's Appearance
View of survey in Normal View
View of survey in Web View
Text editing can only be done in Normal view,
while Web view allows for formatting changes.
After writing each question, it is a good idea to
switch back and forth between these views to make
sure no formatting quirks occurred, as sometimes
does in Perseus.
18
Table Formatting
In Web view, select Table Properties.
From the outline, select the question you would
like to format. The options for formatting are
indicating differences in odd and even rows,
which part of the table you would like bordered,
and the thickness of that border.
19
Viewing Table Format Changes
To view the changes you have made to your table,
return to Normal view, and then back again to Web
view.
20
Fill in the Blank
When creating a Fill in the blank question, the
wizard will ask for a list of topics to which
one can respond. One way to use this feature is
with categories such as Name, Address, or
Phone Number. When asking a question that
requires a short response, such as What is your
favorite part about living on campus? The
category you type in can be Favorite Part.
Drop Downs Some categories are finite and more
common, which when typed in will bring up a drop
down menu for selection which can be seen in the
Web view. These automatic categories are State,
Province, Country, Region, Industry,
Month, and Day.
21
Custom Drop Downs
The Custom Drop Down is a new feature to Perseus.
It is best utilized in cases where there are a
finite number of responses, yet there are more
than simply three or four options as would be
used in a Choose One question.
To create a Custom DropDown response to a Fill in
the Blank question, before using the wizard for
your question, click Tools then Options
followed by clicking on the Advanced tab.
If you plan to use this feature in a survey to
be sent to others, please contact the Office of
Student Affairs Assessment for assistance.
22
Custom Drop Downs Continued
In the Advanced tab, under AutoDropdown Lists
click Add. Then enter the name of the category
you would like to add. You must enter this title
exactly when asked for the category of your Fill
in the Blank response. On the following
WordPad-like screen, enter each choice for the
drop down, one per line, as before in Perseus. Go
to File and Save to keep these options
available to you. Click OK when finished.
23
Essay Question
To create an Essay Question, use the question
wizard as before. With this type of question, no
categories or response options are necessary. In
Web view the space for the response will have a
scroll bar to allow for a longer answer.
24
Web Formatting
The color scheme appearance of your survey can be
changed in Web view under Web Formatting.
25
Take Home Assignment
  • Access Perseus through Terminal Server
  • Create a questionnaire (5-10 questions)
  • Mix up the questions-yes/no, multiple choice,
essay. Create at least one question within a
    table.
  • Final thoughts
