    deaths and up to 50 million worldwide
  • 1957 influenza pandemic at least 70,000 U.S.
    deaths and 1-2 million deaths worldwide
  • 1968 influenza pandemic at least 34,000 U.S.
    deaths and 700,000 deaths worldwide

  • Rapid worldwide spread- past pandemics have
    spread globally in 2-3 separate waves
  • Health Care Systems would be overloaded
  • Medical supplies would be inadequate

How is Frisco ISD preparing for a possible
influenza pandemic?
  • Frisco I.S.D. Pandemic Influenza Task Force was
    organized in October 2006 to monitor worldwide
    events and develop a plan for our school district
  • Hand sanitizer dispensers have been made
    accessible in all classrooms and common areas
    throughout all of the schools in the district.
  • A district-wide Cough Etiquette and Hand
    washing campaign was launched
  • F.I.S.D. website has been expanded to include
    Seasonal Flu information and Pandemic Flu links
  • Symptom-specific data is being collected when
    students are called in for an illness related
    absence
  • Community Education programs are being presented
    to provide up to date information

Limit the spread of germs and infection
  • Stay home from work or school if sick!

2. Practice good Cough Etiquette
  • Coughing/sneezing into sleeve and not hands
  • Use tissues when sneezing or blowing nose
  • Throw away tissues
  • immediately after use
  • Wash hands or use
  • alcohol-based hand
  • sanitizer immediately after
  • using tissues to disinfect
  • hands

Practice proper hand washing
  • Wet hands completely
  • Use plenty of soap and work into a lather for at
    least 20 seconds-Alphabet Song
  • Rinse hands with water
  • Dry hands and throw paper towel away
  • -after sneezing, coughing and blowing nose
  • -after using the bathroom
  • -before you eat
  • -Before/after touching eyes, mouth or nose

Store food and water
  • Store a minimum of 2 week supply
  • Prescription drugs-Glucose/BP monitoring
    equipment
  • Over the counter medicines-For fever, diarrhea,
    etc.
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Portable radio
  • Manual can opener
  • Garbage bags
  • Tissues, toilet paper, diapers

  • Ready to eat canned meats, vegetables, beans and
    soups
  • Protein or fruit bars
  • Dry cereal and dried fruit
  • Canned juices, bottled water
  • Peanut butter
  • Crackers
  • Other non-perishable foods

Miscellaneous
  • Volunteer with local groups to prepare and assist
    with emergency response teams
  • Talk with family members and loved ones about how
    they would be cared for if they got sick, or what
    will be needed to care for them in your home.
  • Get involved in your community as it works to
    prepare for a possible influenza pandemic or
    other emergencies
