Review of the Alcoholism Drug Addiction Act 1966

• - The Ministry is currently looking into
  human rights implications - Legislation Design
  Committee has given advice - Considerable
  work to do in compiling a case for
  compulsory treatment for addiction - This is
  still progressing

National Opioid Practice Guidelines Review

• Final draft in editing stage
• Should be out by end of this year
• Next meeting of NAOPT on 5 December

Feasibility Study for the Central DHB Region
Effective Interventions

• Proposed to allocate 15 additional intensive day
  programme places/residential beds, 2 medical
  detox beds, and associated services issue of
  where best to place these in the lower North
  Island
• Ministry of Health met in February 2008 with
  Central Region DHB Mental Health Managers
  recommended consultation with Regional Addiction
  Networks
• Two meetings held
• Recommendations wider than allocating services
  more about approaches to take in the region

• Promotion of Kaupapa Maori approaches, including
  services
• Including Offender input
• Developing the workforce
• Developing services
• - withdrawal services
• - related services
• Recognising the use of language
• Promoting cross-sector relationships

Where to from here?

• Alignment with other Central Region planning
  processes
• Joint MOH/DHB response?
• Proposals for additional services will be part of
  a bid for funding
• We wont know whether we have go ahead until next
  year
• If successful, the Ministry will need to work
  with DHBs on planning services, and with iwi,
  kaumatua, Maori providers on designing service
  for Maori
• Ministry wants to be careful about raising
  expectations and involving people early on around
  what the services will look like
