Hasty Moral Judgment
  • Hasty moral judgments are non-rational because
    theyre based on emotion, prejudice,
    preconception, intolerance or self-righteousness.

3
September 11, 2001
  • An example of this way of thinking is what
happened after the tragedy on September 11, 2001.
The emotion after this horrific event caused a
lot of people to think irrationally. Hasty moral
judgments were made about Muslim people. Someone
who may have been a friend, colleague or neighbor
before the attacks was now considered an enemy.
The prejudice that was directed at Muslim people
was incredible. This type of unreasonable
thinking caused a lot of anguish for the Muslim
    Americans in this country.

Abortion
  • An example of hasty moral judgment could be on
how a friend of mine was 100 against abortion
because of her religious values and actively
spoke against and down upon her peers that had
this procedure done. This was a hasty moral
judgment of hers because when she was in the same
position she realized the reasons why other young
girls got abortion was the same as her own now.

5
The Mormon Church
  • Another example of hasty moral judgment would
be the discrimination of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints, otherwise known as
the Mormon Church. Mormons face prejudice often
because of their beliefs and practices they no
longer do, like polygamy. Polygamy is practiced
by Mormon Fundamentalists, a separate religion
that believes in certain aspects of Mormonism.
Hasty moral judgments made against the church
would be opinions of what people think the
Mormons do. If they had all the facts, they would
know that not everything they believe is true.

Voting
  • With the 2008 election coming up I have seen
many examples of hasty moral judgment in talks of
who to vote for. One of my best friends is
choosing not to vote in this election because
Hilary is no longer in the race. Normally I
wouldnt see much of a problem with this except
for the fact that the only reason she wanted
Hilary to win was because she is a woman. My
grandparents on the other hand are going to cast
votes for John McCain simply because he is the
republican candidate. By not doing the research
on the candidates many people are making
decisions that could be detrimental to the well
being of our country. It is not enough to pass
judgment and make decisions based only on what we
feel to be true or what we have been told was
right. George Carlin once said that people are
always willing to give up a little bit of freedom
for a little bit of security.

Analysis
  • Non-rational thinking weakens your ability to
obtain key critical thinking goals insight and
understanding. Your thinking is hindered by
    emotion, prejudice, preconception, intolerance or
    self-righteousness.
  • When you give up the ability to think for
yourself and seek out answers to questions that
you feel comfortable with you risk loosing your
independence, and it is you who will see the
brother and sister in the grocery store as the
product of bad parenting and sketchy morals.
  • In order to avoid falling into this trap, make
sure you are not making a judgment based on your
feelings about the subject but rather on careful
examination of the facts. Look at things
    objectively rather than subjectively.

Mediums
  • The media is a trigger for this non-rational way
of thinking. Information is delivered to the
public in dramatic ways and with only bits and
pieces of real factual evidence (if any at all).
  • News reports, for example, supply information to
the public on tragic events as they are
unfolding. Since they are reporting as they go
and are unable to get all the facts at one time,
they speculate on what they do not know.
  • Tabloids are another example. These magazines
have pictures plastered all over the covers with
big bold statements. Now, most of us know that
this information is either misleading or false,
but children dont. They see these at checkout
counters in grocery stores and/or they hear about
it from other kids at school and they think its
    real.
  • Media portrays many stereotypes that cause people
to make hasty moral judgments. For example,
racism, like in airplane scenes when people see a
Muslim, they automatically think a terrorist. No
one should make judgments on someone just because
    of their appearance.
  • In politics, kids tend to go by their family's
choice in who to vote for. Kids without thinking
and really analyzing what is going on. Kids
should actually look into each politician and do
their research themselves to know exactly who or
    what to vote for.
