Who and when
  • Hellenistic religion includes various systems of
    beliefs and practices
  • of the people who lived under the influence of
    ancient Greek culture
  • the Roman Empire (ca. 300 BC to 300 AD).
  • It was one of the more creative times in world
    religion.

5
The role of Man
  • Mans service is devoted to his community, city,
    state and nation.
  • This allows the community to evolve as a whole.
  • These groups evolve by worshipping divinity in
    their own way.
  • It was viewed as racism to impose ones customs,
    festivals and religion to anybody.

6
Principles of Hellenic Religion
  • The basic Cosmologic principles of the Hellenic
religion derive from Orphean Theology. Other
sources are the Orphean Hymns to the Gods and the
    living oral tradition.
  • The Cosmos - infinite Space and perpetual Time
has always existed, is always evolving.
  • The Natural Law was never created, but always
    existed.
  • The Cosmos, Man and Life are all values.
  • Conscience and Higher Conscience are produced by
    the ever-evolving Cosmos.
  • The Cosmos is a physical system that has no place
for arbitrary non-physical entities. The Cosmos
is not opposed by any power. History is
    never-ending.
  • All is caused by the Cosmos which has always
existed and there is no outside force.

7
  • Once the divine level, or supreme evolution
happens. Then One becomes a hero, a demon, a god
and an Olympian god. So on and so forth.
  • This is why gods were viewed as people very like
    humans.

8
  • Gods do not create the Cosmos they represent
highest order products of the Cosmos. They cannot
violate the Natural Law they observe and
supervise the Law. The Natural Law has twelve
    divisions, six concerning the Continuous
Substance which is supervised by the six male
Olympian gods, and six the Particulate which are
watched by the six female Olympian gods.
  • The two sacred Essential Substances are of equal
importance to the Cosmos so are the Gods and
Goddesses, Male and Female, acting in harmony.

9
The People in Charge
  • 12 main Olympian Gods. Each had a specific job,
cities and days or times of worship.
  • Zeus - King of gods. God of sky and thunder.
  • Poseidon God of sea and earthquakes.
  • Apollo God of light, truth, sun and the arts.
  • Aphrodite- goddess of love, lust and beauty.
  • Ares god of bloodlust.
  • Athena Goddess of heroes and Athens.
  • Dionysus God of ecstasy.
