Geography
  • Egypt is in the Northeastern part of Africa. The
climate is very hot and dry because of the Sahara
Desert running through. One of the most
important parts of this area is the Nile River
which runs towards the Mediterranean sea. Every
year the Nile floods because the snow on the
mountains melts. The floods bring nutrients that
leave the soil along the Nile fertile enough for
plants to grow. Some of the crops the Egyptians
grew included wheat, barley, lettuce, onions,
leeks, dill, grapes, and melons. Some of the
trees they grew were Christ's thorn and
eucalyptus. el-Amarna was a city built around
1350 B.C. and then was abandoned 20 years later.
It now lies about half way between Cairo and
    Luxor.

Economics
  • The ancient Egyptians used trade to get the
things they needed even after coins were
introduced. For the farmers grain and oil was
used as a type of money. During a famine which
happened often, the people who stored their food
didnt starve. Most of the farmers would trade
food for land so that they could become wealthy.
Priests were often given gifts by villagers which
were re-distributed to the needy. People could
also buy slaves for money. To buy a female slave
it would have cost 4 deben and 1 kit of silver.

Religion and Philosophy
  • Religion was the most important thing in Egyptian
life. They worshipped as many as 2000 gods and
goddesses. The gods and goddesses were usually
symbolized by half human, half animal characters.
They worshipped some animals such as the bull,
the cat, and the crocodile. They believed that
the world started as just an ocean and then a
pile of dry land rose up and the god of the sun,
Re, appeared. They believed he created light and
all things. The job of the priests was to take
care of the gods and attend to their needs. Some
of the gods were Amun, Amon-Ra, and Osiris.

Mummies
  • The first ancient Egyptians buried the dead in
pits in the desert. The dry sand and the heat
from the sand dehydrated the bodies creating
    mummies.
  • Later on they starter burying the dead bodies in
coffins for protection from animals in the
desert. Centuries later the Egyptians discovered
a method of preserving the dead bodies so that
they wouldnt decay. Before wrapping the bodies
in strips of linen, they treated them with oils
and other fluids to keep them looking lifelike.

Language, Education and the Arts
  • The Egyptians used pictures to write the ancient
    Egyptian language. They were called
hieroglyphics. At first they were strictly used
to keep records of the kings belongings. The
pictures could be written from left to right,
right to left, or up and down.People who could
afford for their sons to go to school, sent them
at the age of 7. They learned about religion.
Girls didnt go to school, but wealthy children
learned to read, write and do math.
  • Both ancient Egyptian men and women wore
    jewellery. Such as bracelets, necklaces,
anklets, earrings and rings. The jewellery was
made of copper, gold, shells and sometimes even
    clay.

Sociology
  • The ancient Egyptians lived in families. They
valued family life and children. Most couples
had children and if they didnt they would pray
to the gods and goddesses for help. They also
used magic to try to have children. Wealthy
people had slaves and servants to look after
their children for them. Women were equal to men
but still had to respect them. The women were
legally allowed to participate in things like
business deals, the owning of land and had to
    represent themselves in court.
