USDOT/FHWA Vision For The VII Initiative

• The USDOT/FHWA vision for the VII initiative
  includes the development and nationwide
  deployment of
• An integrated communications infrastructure that
  supports both vehicle-to-vehicle and
  vehicle-to-infrastructure communications
• The vision also includes the intent of reaching
  several major goals related to transportation
  safety, mobility and commerce.

USDOT Goals For The VII Initiative

• Safety Avoiding road departure crashes and
  improving crash avoidance at intersections and
  dangerous curves improving traveler information
  related to dangerous road conditions and traffic
  incidents
• Mobility Improving traveler information so
  better decisions can be made on when, where and
  how to travel improving traffic signal
  operation, incident response/impact mitigation,
  infrastructure defect reporting/repair, and the
  availability of real-time information on roadway
  surface conditions
• Commerce Improving toll payment, fee payment,
  and inter-jurisdictional trade, and adding
  capacity to support customer demand for
  convenience and entertainment services such as
  downloading movies and music

Application Development

• Twenty Day-1 Use Cases have been developed and
  reviewed by members of the VII Working Group and
  Subject Matter Experts.
• The Use Cases were selected based on a number of
  factors
• Meeting high priority safety, mobility, and
  commerce needs
• Need to be achievable within acceptable
  timeframes
• Provide some early benefit to users and operators
• Achievable with low penetration of VII-equipped
  vehicles
• Providing the ability to test the system and
  assist the decision making process
