Art in Prince William County High Schools Art in
the Park Forest Park Art I students have current
artwork, focusing on line, in the display cases
outside the Art Department. Advanced students in
Portfolio Prep. have Foreshortened Self-Portraits
in mixed media on display in the display case in
the front lobby. Whooo Hoooo to the Rockin Art
Students at Forest Park High School. The National
Art Honor Society at Forest Park is making clay
bowls for the ACTS food bank program. Their
ceramic bowls will be auctioned in the Bowls for
Life program to benefit the county food
bank. David Costa, IT independent study student
with Ms. Dittamo, has won an award through the
Chinn Library Creative Arts contest. He submitted
a beautiful, digitally created and enhanced,
seashore scene. The IT Computer Graphics I class
took digital photos of each other. Their
photographs were imported into Photoshop. The
students manipulated their self-portraits to
create a cartoon image using various Photoshop
Tools.
Theatre Opportunities in Prince William County
High Schools in November
CFPA students at Woodbridge High School present
Night Watch on October 26, 27 28, November
2,3 4. Friday and Saturday performances begin
at 730 and Sunday matinees are at 200.This
intriguing production showcases the talents of
the CFPA theatre students, the art students, the
TV production students, and the music technology
students. The WSHS theatre department is also
performing community service,. They are
collecting canned goods for the Dumfries food
bank at ACTS. Come Blow Your Horn by Neal Simon
will open at WSHS on November 30 and Dec. 1 2
at 730.
OPHS Players perform William Shakespeares, A
Comedy of Errors, on Nov. 1 3 at 730 pm in
the Lillian Orlich Auditorium. This show will be
directed by OPHS Math teacher, Carl Long. Tickets
are 5.00 at the door. Hylton High School Theatre
students will perform Arabian Nights on Nov. 8,
9, 10 at 730 pm in the school
auditorium. Gar-Field High School Drama is
performing The Complete Works of William
Shakespeare on Nov. 15, 16, 17 at the school
auditorium. This creative and hilarious show
gives Shakespeares plays a new face including a
football game, a cooking show, and a disco party.
The show will begin at 730. Tickets are 5.00 at

Celebrating the Arts The Arts programs of PWCS
were represented at the Superintendents
Breakfast at Lockheed Martin on October 16. The
Camerata Singers from Potomac High School,
under the direction of Allan Weberg, provided
morning entertainment. Elementary art students
from Antietam, Buckland Mills, King, Marshall,
and Mountain View created amazing sculptural
centerpieces for the tables. Thank you to
everyone!!!!

World Café, Culture Fest at Glenkirk
Elementary On Saturday,October 6, the cafeteria
at Glenkirk Elementary School was transformed
into a world café. The school community shared
their many different heritages in displays from
their homeland through art, artifacts, jewelry,
clothing, language samples, food, music and
dance. Over 16 different cultures were
represented. All in attendance enjoyed this
opportunity to come together as an international
community. Fifth grader Tristen Gulley-Davenport
commented, I enjoyed learning about all the many
different cultures that exist here at Glenkirk. I
learned so much about all of my friends
heritages. I especially liked sampling the
Ethiopian food! Glenkirk parent Julio Saracho
summarized the evening with emotion when he said,
I am from Bolivia, my wife is from Laos, our
children are American and they are all beautiful.

Forest Park Chorus Performs
The Platinum Vocal Jazz performed for the
Washington Post Distinguished Educational
Leadership Award nominees on Tuesday, October 23
at Forest Park High School. Under the direction
of Lara Brittain, the ensemble entertained the
attendees with Alexanders Ragtime Band, Gift
to Be Simple, and a medley of Irvin Berlin tunes.

A Healthier US Forty-six elementary schools in
PWC celebrated their efforts toward living a
healthier lifestyle. Posters created by art
students represented fifteen of their schools at
the USDA celebration held at Neabsco Elementary
School in October.
Belmont Elementary
Bingo at Bel Air The second grade art students at
Bel Air Elementary School made bingo cards full
of vertical, horizontal, diagonal, zig-zag,
broken, and curved lines. We learned about Pablo
Picasso and his use of line, shape and of course,
imagination! The bingo cards were cut into shapes
and became parts of the face for our cubist
portraits. Color was added with watercolors for a
beautiful resist effect.

Hylton Students are inspired by the
Masters Mobiles inspired by Alexander Calder and
created by Mrs. Sefrens Art III students are on
display in the library at Hylton High School.
Mrs. Magnesons Portfolio Prep. Class has
Altered Books also displayed in the school
library.

Middle School Artists
All County Choral Event On Friday and Saturday,
October 26 and 27, over 300 choral students
representing all middle and high schools in
Prince William County, rehearsed at Freedom High
School. The rehearsals culminated in the All
county Chorus Concert Saturday afternoon. The 140
students of the All County Middle School Chorus
students were directed by guest conductor,
Deborah Moyers Proctor, a former music teacher
from Prince William County Schools. The middle
school chorus was accompanied by Betsy Hermann,
choral director from Osbourn Park High School.
The All County Treble Chorus was lead by Dr.
Sandra Peter, an Assistant Professor of Music at
Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. The treble choir
was accompanied by Tatevik Hovhanniayan,
currently the accompanist at Potomac Middle
School. Dr. Timothy Peter, Professor of Music and
head of the Music Department at Luther College,
conducted the All County Senior Mixed Chorus. The
Mixed Chorus was accompanied by Allan Weberg,
choral director at Potomac High School.
Art students in Mrs. Albrights and Ms. Sadkis
classes, have broken in the new kilns at
Gainesville Middle School. The eighth grade
students in Mrs. Albrights class are glazing
slab houses and Ms. Sadkis seventh grade
students modeled masks in clay.
Art students at Bull Run Middle School in Mrs.
Blaises classes are exploring printmaking.
Focusing on the element of space, positive and
negative, the seventh grade students are using
the stencil method to reproduce their creative
images.
Junior and Senior Regional Orchestra
Event Orchestra students from Prince William
County Schools will participate in the Junior and
Senior Regional Orchestra Event at Brooke Point
High School on Friday and Saturday, November 2
3. Student participants will perform in a concert
at Brooke Point on Saturday, November 3 at 400 PM
Mrs. Blaisess eighth grade students created
wonderful textured images by carving linoleum
plates using the subtractive printing process.

Art Content Day Tuesday, Nov. 6 at Buckland Mills
Elementary School from 130 to 300. Art Lessons
using a Smart Board will be presented by Ashley
Olsen. Vicki Burns and Rebecca Graham-Hyson will
present tips and techniques with color pencil.
Please bring related art lessons and websites to
share. VAEA Conference, Williamsburg, Va. Nov.
15, 16, 17. The announcement of the statewide
YAM scrapbook competition will be announced at
the Saturday morning breakfast. Every PWC school
participated last year, keep your fingers
crossed. Our Jamestown inspired book was
designed and compiled by Sherry Bosarge at Alvey
Elementary. Also representing the art program in
PWC, Wendy Padgett and Beth Owermohle will
present Mason Stains and Vicki Burns, JoAnne
Smith, and Wendy Padgett will present Bookmaking
and Visual Literacy.
Music Content Day Tuesday, Nov. 6 at Stonewall
Middle School from 130 to 300. Music teachers
will meet in the computer lab for lessons using
Finale Notepad.
VMEA Conference, Norfolk, Va. Nov. 15, 16, 17.
The Osbourn Park High School Advanced Orchestra,
under the direction of Brian Smith, will perform
early on the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 15 at
the Conference. Please make sure to attend the
performance and support our student musicians.
Professional Development Opportunities Art
teachers representing all grade levels have
explored creating art with fused glass. Using
jewelry and ceramic kilns, glass can be used to
create amazing pieces for use in art projects and
jewelry. Students in the visual art program in
PWC will now be exposed to a new medium for their
artistic expressions.
The deadline to submit articles for the December
Arts In Focus will be Wednesday, November 28,
2007. Quick Notes deadline will be Tuesday,
November 13, 2007.
