Mummification
  • By Chantal, Sara, Paula

2
Why They Mummified
  • The Ancient Egyptians mummified because they
believed that the dead would need their body in
    the afterlife.
  • Also because they loved their life so much that
    they wanted to continue it.

3
Who was Mummified
  • The Egyptians mummified the Pharaohs and the
    people who could afford it.

4
Materials Used
  • The materials they used to mummify people was a
crotchet hook that they used to pull the brain
and let it come out through the nostrils.
  • Embalmers took out the organs and sometimes the
heart and put them in Canopic jars.

5
Canopic Jars
  • The organs were placed in canopic jars and were
sometimes put back in to the body after they
    dried.
  • If they dried the Egyptians put the jars in the
    persons tomb.
  • The lids of the jars represented gods called
theFor sons of Horus. The gods protected the
    organs.

6
The Process of Mummification
  • The mummification process is when the Egyptian
wrapped the body in linen to go to the afterlife.
  • They placed amulets between the layers of
wrappings for good luck for the underworld.
  • If the heart weighed more than a feather the body
couldnt go to the afterlife but if it weighed
lighter than a feather it could go to the
    afterlife.

7
What the Priest Does
  • During the mummification a priest reads a spell
out loud to help ward off evil spirits and help
the deceased go to the afterlife.

8
How they Mummified
  • To mummify a person the Egyptians wrapped the
persons body in linen. It took about 70 days.
  • They were put into natron salt to be dried. After
it is dried the body is stuffed to be shaped to
    its normal size.
  • Next, it would be colored and then ready to be
wrapped. The wrapping lasted up to 15 days.
  • After this was over the mummy was placed in its
    coffin, ready for the afterlife.

9
How They were Preserved
  • Some mummies were preserved wet, frozen,or dried
    but mostly dried.
