Vintage Waves
  • How to Rock that 40's Style

2
  • Whether you crave the Rockabilly style or are
dressing for a costume party with a 1940s-era
theme, knowing how to rock vintage waves is
always a great skill to have. In the forties,
hair was smooth and stylized with waves and small
or large curls. No matter how sophisticated the
40s hair looked, with the right accessories and
products, you should be able to create your own
    forties hairdo.
  • The epitome of forties glamour were the
glamorous hairstyles of Bette Davis and Rita
Hayworth. In each and every hairstyle, the
forties were exemplified with curls. Polished
femininity were what hair curls stood for. These
styles were very much en vogue and even if they
are old school, they are still quite popular
today. Yesteryear's pin curls and side parts are
thought to be too delicate by many women to
authentically replicate. On the contrary, there
are actually a few things you can do to copy a
    vintage 40's hairstyle at home.

Vintage Style Hair
  • To get your hair in retro vintage styles, the
first thing you need to do is make sure that you
shampoo and condition your hair to protect it
from getting damaged with your styling. Next, pin
your head entirely in pin curls. You can add a
dollop of mousse before you begin pinning up your
hair. Next, comb out one-inch hair sections and
with your index finger, roll these around. Once
secure, push curls to your head's root with your
hand. To hold curls in place, position a couple
of bobby pins into them. The first pin needs to
anchor the hair and go straight across the
middle. The other pin needs to go into the hair
at a perpendicular angle to the 1st pin. The
results needs to look like a letter "X" created
by the pins on top of the curls.

  • Pin Curls
  • The pinning process needs to be repeated until
your whole head is covered in pincurls. Set this
for at least eight hours. Styling your hair this
way before you sleep will help it set in the
appropriate manner. Gently shape the curls with
your fingers after you remove each and every one
of the bobby pins. For any vintage style of the
forties, this is the point you basically start
    with.
  • Peek-A-Boo Bangs
  • 1940's hairstyles also included peek-a-boo bangs
and updos. Everywhere, women had their own updo
version, which is another great 40's hair style.
If you have long or shoulder-length hair, it is
easy to create updos and a great bad-hair-day
option. All you really need for this style is
bobby pins, hair elastic, a comb and a hairbrush.

  • 40's Updo
  • To get a forties updo, gather your brushed hair
in the nape of your neck to create a low
ponytail. With hair elastic, secure this and
split the ponytail in two. Tease each half using
a comb and place the comb in the hair sections
about halfway down the section lengths. Next,
comb these back towards the elastic. Take 1 part,
twist it under and secure this with bobby pins.
Do this to the other half as well. If you want a
truly sleek forties look, use hairspray to smooth
    out stray strands.

  • 40s School Girl
  • After making a side part, pull your hair into a
ponytail and roll your front bangs out towards
your forehead before pinning them for added
height and a cool rockabilly 40's look.
  • Page Boy
  • For a page boy look, comb your hair to one side
which makes it look elegant and simple. You will
then be able to casually imbibe the glamorous
    40s image that you crave.
  • Hairspray
  • After you are happy with the look of your hair,
finish with hairspray. No style of the forties is
complete without hairspray holding it all
    together.
