Title: Brenna Flaugher for the DES Collaboration Feb. 2005
1Dark Energy Survey
- 5000 sq-deg in the South Galactic Cap in 30 of 5
years (09 14) - 300,000 galaxies, 30,000 clusters, 2000 SN- Ia
- 3 sq-degree camera with 2.2 deg FOV
- SDSS g,r,i,z filters covering 400 to 1100nm
- Limiting mag of griz 22.8, 23.4, 24.0, 23.6
- Prime Focus Cage of the Blanco Telescope
- We plan to replace this and everything inside it
2DES Status
- DES went through the PAC in April and June 04
- July 04 we received Stage 1 approval
- permission to submit full technical proposal to
NOAO - license to recruit funding
- Aug/Sept 04 reviewed and accepted by NOAO
- Awaiting outcome of the Dark Energy Task Force
- DETF should issue a report in summer 05
- If favorable DOE will proceed directly with CD-0
followed shortly by CD-1 - Need to get Equip. funds in FY07 to stay on 2009
delivery schedule. - FY05/06 are RD years
- CCDs establish yield, learn to test CCDs,
demonstrate packaging - Optics finalize design
- Front End Electronics develop system design,
begin prototyping, testing - Develop firm cost of project for CD1 review in
early FY06
3DES Organization
- DES is divided into 2 projects under direction of
Project director (J. Peoples) - WBS 1.0 Instrument project Fermilab
- WBS 2.0 Data Management project UIUC/NCSA
Instrument project provides simulated and real
data to Data management project
Until now Instrument Construction has been
mainly PPD Survey Planning has been CD-EAG
4DES Instrument Project Costs
Have lined up MS funding from UIUC (400k),
UChicago(400k) and PPD (240k so far in
FY05) Univ. College London will submit 1.3M
pound (2.6M) proposal to PPARC they would
contribute to the optics if successful Barcelona
has submitted a proposal to Spanish Gov. (700k
total) they would contribute to Front End
Electronics and CCD testing
5DES Instrument Reference Design
3556 mm

1575 mm
Filters
Optical Lenses
6Camera Reference Design
Focal Plane
Camera Design
feed through board
62 2k x 4k CCDs for main image, 4-side
buttable, 15 micron pixels 8 1k x 1k CCDs
for guiding and focus
Frontend electronics
Focal Plane
7Front End Electronics and DAQ
off the cage
- Large focal plane implies long cables between CCD
and electronics crates - Reference design being developed may have
preamps close to CCDs in kapton cables - Goals are noise lt 5 e-, linearity lt0.25, support
a readout rate of 250 kpix/sec - Reliable operation requires careful consideration
of internal and external components - Minimize heat generated in the PF cage by
locating DAQ off telescope
8Front End Electronics and Data Acquisition
Monsoon architecture
- DES plans to use Monsoon DHE and DAQ as starting
point for FEE and DAQ. - Monsoon will be used for testing CCDs until
Production FEE is available - Modifications needed
- higher density than in current design (16
channels instead of 8) - Minimize space and power on the telescope.
DAQ UIUC is leading DAQ
FEE
9Schedule Milestones
- Optics and CCDs are the most Challenging tasks
- CCDs Initial run FY05, Yield determination FY06
and FY07 - Optics Order glass in FY06, Figuring/polishing
in FY07
Fully Commissioned by June 2009!
10Potential CD involvement Hardware
- Front End Electronics Terri Shaw is leading the
effort - she is 50 DES plus we have 50 of another EE
- schedule says we need 3 EE FTE this year
- Barcelona will provide 0.5 -1 by end of summer
could use more at FNAL !!! - Test stand support adapter cables, cards,
Monsoon operations - FEE System design workshop March 14-18
- will bring together all the experts CTIO,
Tucson, Barcelona - flesh out the overall system design, define
strategy for getting questions answered,
organizing the different groups - Other tasks that could use CD electrical
engineering support - Slow controls Del Allspach is leading this
- control of shutter, filter, focal plane
temperature, vac. pressure - May have space/heat constraints that requires EE
to design custom boards - Telescope/Instrument controls
- Coordination of all the disparate systems Slew
telescope, open shutter, guide telescope, start
DAQ - CTIO will lead, but they do not have enough
resources
11CD involvement software
- DES Instrument project (FNAL) provides simulated
and real data to DM project - Simulations going on now, form data challenges
each year - FNAL also should be capable of contributing to
data reprocessing during the survey (2009-2014) - Resources are collected under WBS 1.3 Survey
planning - CPs needed 0.5 FTE in 05, 1 in 06, 2 in each
07 and 08 - This is roughly consistent with what is available
in EAG, without increasing the size of the EAG CP
group but is tight until SDSS ramps down (July
2008) - The ability for FNAL to do DES science analysis
would be enhanced by adding additional resources
that increase access to the data - high performance data bases developed at FNAL
- grid based mass data storage transfers
- further development of National Virtual
Observatory at Fermilab - Chris will say more about these the point is
that they would all benefit DES
12Conclusions
- We have passed the initial reviews, and have
embarked on an RD plan with funds for
collaborating institutions Fermilab - CD could get involved in DES hardware
- Front End Electronics, slow controls,
Telescope/Instrument controls - CD is already contributing to Survey Planning,
- Critical that EAG support be maintained
- Further development of data access technologies
would increase the ability for FNAL to do DES
science
