A little bit of history

• Also goes by i.Link or IEEE1394
• Created by Apple Computer Corporation in the late
  1990s
• Original project name was Chefcat, the name of
  Michael Teeners favorite coffee cup.
• The connectors used are related to the connectors
  on the Nintendo Game Boy
• They were chosen because they were reliable, easy
  to use and were sturdy and stable
• Was created as a replacement for the SCSI Bus .
• Firewire won the most significant new
  technology award in 1993

Uses

• Common use is to connect data storage devices and
  digital cameras to computers.
• Also used in industrial systems for machine
  vision and professional audio systems.
• Used over USB due to the faster effective speed,
  higher power distribution capabilities, and does
  not require a computer host
• Can connect up to 63 peripherals in an acyclic
  network structure ( hubs instead of the SCSIs
  linear structure), which also allows peer to peer
  communication without using system memory.

• Apple proposed licensing for US3,000
• Intel had sunk a great deal into the standard
  with the improved 1394a-2000 standard being
  partially based on work contributed by Intel.
  However though, A group within Intel decided to
  drop 1394 support and bring out the improved USB
  2.0 instead.
• Sony and the other backers said that they owned
  the patents too and were per-port royalties.
  Therefore, Apple would have to pay about US15
  per port to the other backers. In the end, the
  creation of the "1394 Licensing Authority was
  created which entailed that every end user
  system got charged .25 for anyone that uses
  any 1394

Uses continued

• Popular because it too like USB is hot-swappable
• Supported throughout all platforms, however with
  Microsoft Windows XP , the default speed that
  is allowed with Firewire is only 100 mb/second

Summary

• Firewire is faster then other conventional means
• FireWire has replaced SCSI due to lower
  performance costs and a simplified and more
  adaptable cabling system.
• Almost all modern digital camcorders and many
  other devices include this connection since 1995.
  Many computers have built-in FireWire ports
  including all Macintosh and Sony computers .
