Why Imperialism?
  • Europe no longer had power in the Western

  • U.S. had expanded its borders from Atlantic to
    Pacific.
  • Europe and America are both itching to expand
    elsewhere.

4
Why Expand?
  • Economicsthey wanted access to raw materials
(without paying for them) and new markets in
    which to sell goods.
  • Military Politicsthey wanted military bases
around the world to gain military and political
    advantage.
  • Racism Ethnocentrismthey thought that they
were racially and culturally superior to all
    non-whites.

5
Kingdom of Hawaii
  • U.S. businessmen move in and slowly take over 75
of Hawaiis wealth through sugar plantations.
  • Businessmen force Hawaiis King Kalakaua to
    allow
  • Only wealthy landowners to vote (giving the
    businessmen all control).
  • U.S. naval bases to be built (Pearl Harbor).

6
U.S. Takes Over Hawaii (1898)
  • King Kalakaua died.
  • His sister, Liliuokalani, became Queen.
  • She wanted to give voting rights back to every
Hawaiian citizen, not just rich people.
  • U.S. Marines come ashore, while volunteer troops
imprison the Queen and make Sanford Dole the
    new President.
  • Pres. Grover Cleveland is mad.
  • Anti-imperialist, supporter of G. Washington
    politics
  • Pres. McKinley (after Cleveland) is happy and
    annexes Hawaii.
