- 1) Consider the power of a name. How can names be
important? Where have you seen instances in
Middle Earth that suggests the power of names? In
the New Testament what kind of effect did Jesus
name have on demons? - Bible Passage Acts 1618, Mark 1617, Mark
938-39. What is going on in all of these
passages? - 2) Can you think of a friend that has repeatedly
helped you stay out of trouble like Sam who
repeatedly keeps Frodo from putting the ring on
in the presence of the Nazgul? What did this
friend do for you to help you out? Have you ever
served as the role of Sam for a friend of yours?
What was that like for you helping another? - 3) We see Gandalf in his resurrected form in the
Forest of Fangorn. Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas
seem to be blinded and mesmerized by the light
coming from the White Wizard before they
realize who it is. You could make the argument
that Gandalf is resurrected, but what do you know
about the transfiguration story of Jesus? How is
seeing Gandalf similar to reading the story about
Jesus and the disciples on the mountain top? - Bible Passage Matthew 171-8

4) Treebeard and the hobbits, Merry and Pippin,
seem to be forming a bond of trust for one
another at least for Treebeard once Gandalf
confirms for him that Merry and Pippin are indeed
not little orcs. Treebeard also provides Merry
and Pippin with a trustworthy and safe
environment from the rest of the forest, which is
slowly being disrupted from sleep. If you had to
think of someone, is there anyone in your life in
which you can put complete trust in and feel safe
with? 5) When the remainder of the Fellowship
enters the Golden Hall of Rohan to visit King
Theoden, Gandalf helps the king come back to
reason. What do we see as being wrong with King
Theoden? What ails him? 6) After Theoden buries
his son we see Gandalf and Theoden lamenting in
the field. Theoden says No parent should have
to bury their child. How do you think God felt
when Jesus, his only begotten son, died on the
cross, and he lost his only son to the cross and
burial? I want you to specifically focus on the
feelings God might have had at three in the
afternoon when Jesus breathed his last
breath. Bible Passage Luke 2344-47
