Lord Robert Baden-Powell the Founder of Scouting

• Baden-Powell laid down three basic principles of
  Scouting in 1907
• Duty to God
• Duty to Others
• Duty to Self
• When asked where religion came into Scouting and
  Guiding, Baden-Powell replied
• "It is already there. It is a fundamental factor
  underlying Scouting and Guiding."

Juliette Low Founder of Girl Scouts USA
Juliette Low met Baden- Powell in England and was
inspired to bring scouting to girls in the US in
1912. She likewise included the three basic
principles of scouting, which are embodied in the
Girl Scout promise to Serve God and my
country, To help people at all times, To live
by the Girl Scout Law.

What is the Catholic Committee on Scouting?

The Catholic Committee on Scouting is a group of
men and women, lay and religious, who believe
that Scouting should strengthen the spiritual
life of the girls and boys it serves.

In the Diocese of Lexington, the Catholic
Committee on Scouting serves both Girl Scouts and
Boy Scouts. On a national level, there are two
different committees that serve Catholic Boy
Scouts and Catholic Girl Scouts.

The CCS objectives are to promote the
Religious Recognition Programs for Boy Scouts and
Girl Scouts. to sponsor religious retreats and
workshops for all scouts. to oversee
nominations for adult religious recognitions
The CCS meets approximately every two months,
usually in Lexington KY.

Fr. Mike Weglicki serves as the CCS Chaplain. In
2004 in honor of the 25th anniversary of his
ordination, the CCS presented Fr. Mike with a
special Scout Stole.

What is Scout Sunday? Boy Scout Sunday started
sometime in the 1940s as a special way to
celebrate each scouts faith during Scout Week.
Since BSA was incorporated on Feb. 8, 1910, Boy
Scout Sunday is traditionally set as the Sunday
before Feb. 8. Girl Scout Sunday started about
the same time. Since Girl Scouts were founded on
March 12, 1912, Girl Scout Sunday is
traditionally set as the the Sunday before March
12.

The Diocese of Lexington CCS holds one diocesan
Scout Sunday to bring together all scouts at one
time. Dates for Parish and Diocesan Scout Sunday
celebrations are announced each year on the CCS
web site, in the diocesan newspaper, Cross Roads,
and in many parish bulletins.

What are Religious Emblems?
To encourage members to grow stronger in their
faith, many religious groups have developed the
religious emblems programs. The Boy Scouts of
America and Girl Scouts USA recognize the
importance of these programs and allow the
emblems to be worn on the official uniform. .

Workbook for the Light of Christ Program For
Tiger and Wolf Scouts Age 1st and 2nd Grade The
purpose of this emblem is to help the Cub Scout
develop a personal relationship with Jesus and
come to see Jesus as a real person and his
friend.

Light of Christ Medal
The medal shows a Cub Scout and the Paschal
Candle.

Workbook for the Family of God Program
For Brownie Girl Scouts Age1st 3rd Grade
This program helps girls discover the presence of
God in their daily lives as members of their
family and parish. This workbook is also
available in Spanish.

Family of God Medal
The medal shows Jesus with arms outstretched to
two girls.

Workbook for the Parvuli Dei Program
For Bear and Webelo Scouts Age 3rd, 4th and
5th Grade
Boys discover the presence of God in their daily
lives as members of their families and parishes
and perform service to their parish or community.

The medal depicts Jesus and his parents, Mary and
Joseph.

For Junior Girl Scouts Age 4th
6th Grade
Girls discuss and put into action several ways to
live out their Catholic faith.

The medal depicts beams of light emanating from
the Cross.

Workbook for Ad Altare Dei Program For Boy
Scouts Age 6th Grade and older The purpose of
the Ad Altare Dei (To the altar of God) program
is to help Catholic Boy Scouts develop a fully
Christian way of life in the faith community. The
program is organized in chapters based on the
seven Sacraments.

The medal is a Bar and Cross.

Marian Award Program
For Cadette Girl Scouts Age 7th-9th Grade
The Marian Medal enables young women to proclaim
the greatness of the Lord. Participants study
Mary as a model of openness and spirituality and
develop new insights into their personalities,
friends, parents, and the world around them.

The Marian Medal presents a portrait of Jesus and
his mother Mary.

Workbook for Pope Pius XII Award
For Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts
Age 9th Grade and older
This emblem program studies church-related
ministries and vocations. The program deals with
different life choices (single, married,
religious, ordained), occupations and ministries
in the church as calls from God.

Pope Pius XII Medal
The medal depicts the papal tiara and the keys of
the kingdom, framed by the words Dignity,
Respect and Humility.

Workbook for Spirit Alive Program
For Senior Girl Scouts Age 10th-12th Grade
This program is designed for Catholic scouts in
high school. It assists them in discovering how
the Holy Spirit moves in their lives, calling
them to greater participation in the churchs
ministry.

Spirit Alive Medal
The medal shows the Cross and the fiery dove,
symbolizing the Holy Spirit.

Adult Awards
CCS Chaplain Fr. Mike Weglicki presented the St.
George Medal to Bishop Gainer at the 2005 CCS
Bishops Dinner.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Medal
This award recognizes outstanding contributions
by adults who have served Catholic youth in Girl
Scouts for at least 3 years.
St. Anne Medal
This award honors the service of adults who have
contributed to the spiritual development of
Catholic Girl Scouts for 7 or more years and have
furthered Catholic adult leadership in youth
ministry.

Kathy K. received the St. Anne Medal from Pat J.
at the 2004 Bishops Dinner in recognition of
Kathys many years of service to Girl Scouts
religious programs.

Kurt S. received the St. George Medal (and the
Fr. Mark seal of approval) in 2004 at Sacred
Heart Church in Corbin.

Bronze Pelican
The Bronze Pelican recognizes adults who have
served Scouts for at least 3 years and have
served as a religious emblem counselor.
St. George Medal
The St. George Emblem recognizes a longstanding
contribution to the spiritual development of
Catholic Boy Scouts and ongoing commitment to
encouraging religious activities for Scouts of
all faiths.

Alan M. received the St. George Medal and Susan
Y. received the Bronze Pelican Medal in
recognition of their service to the Boy Scouts
and Cub Scouts at MQ. Jill H. received the St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton Medal in recognition of her
service to Girl Scouts at MQHR.

Rosary Patch Awards
This religious program is offered by the Natl
Catholic Committee on Scouting. Both Boy Scouts
and Girl Scouts may earn these patches

To Serve God Patch (from PRAY) For Girl Scouts
Duty to God Patch (from PRAY) For Boy Scouts

Pope Paul VI Unit Award
The National Catholic Committee on Scouting
awards this patch to units that are sponsored by
a Catholic parish or organization and that
complete a series of activities to explore
several aspects of our Catholic faith.

Mother Catherine Spalding Girl Scout Troop Award
The CCS for the Diocese of Lexington developed
this award in 2005 to likewise promote activities
in Girl Scout troops to explore many different
aspects of our Catholic faith.

The MCS GS Troop award is named for Catherine
Spalding, co-founder of the Sisters of Charity of
Nazareth, and one of the great pioneers of the
Kentucky frontier.

Golden Bow Award
The Golden Bow Patch is given in appreciation for
special service. Ben A. presented Golden Bow
awards at the 2006 Bishops Dinner to adults who
helped scouts earn religious awards in 2005-06.

The Gold Medallion Award
The NCCS awards the Gold Medallion to an
outstanding Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop and
Venturing Crew in each of the 14 regions of the
US.
Pack 282 (MQHR) was awarded the Region 5 Gold
Medallion in 2003 for outstanding efforts in all
of its programs

The CCS has resources to help scouts in
multifaith troops to pariticpate in the religious
recognition program specific to their faith.

The requirements for the Religious Patch awards
are found on the Diocese of Lexingtons CCS web
page at http//scout.cdlex.org (Click on the
ABOUT button on the main menu) The requirements
can be printed out from the site. Call the CCS
Secretary at 859-253-1993 x252 for assistance of
any kind. The parent, troop leader or award
counselor sign the application form and order the
patches.

Mike will need a completed application (found in
the workbooks) for each medal ordered and payment
for all medals ordered. Sometimes Fr. Mike has
medals in stock, but if he has to order medals,
it will take him 5-6 weeks to get the medals to
you. Please keep this in mind when you plan your
schedule for earning the medals!!
