All About Academic Search Premier
  • You can use this database in a variety of ways
  • Find articles that originate in trade magazines
or even popular magazines to identify broad
subject fields and topics (or, trends)
  • Typing an word relevant to your assignment into
the database will bring back a long list of
    results

9
Searching for trends in ASP
10
Restricting to Magazines or Trade Journals
  • The options that are included in ASP include the
ability to only search in a certain type of
    publication
  • Academic Journals
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Books
  • Clicking on the magazine tab will narrow your
results to titles that appear in magazines and
    trade journals
  • This will help you to identify popular trends in
    engineering

Now that youve identified a trend keywords and
searching
  • Make sure that the search term you enter into the
database is related to the information you would
    like to receive
  • Go broad first its easier to narrow a search,
    rather than to expand one
  • If you dont get the results you want the first
time, dont worry! Try related terms!

Searching results page
15
Too many results?
  • Often, a broad search will bring back too many
results for you to look through. Keep in mind,
that the best result might not fall on the first
    page.
  • Try refining your search using field restrictions
    and additional keywords!

Manageable Results
  • Too few results is bad, and too many is dreadful.
Shoot for a manageable number that can easily be
    browsed for relevant results
  • Play with your searches
  • Coax the perfect result out of the pile of
    irrelevant results

18
Options
  • Remember that Pitt doesnt own everything, check
with a librarian to make sure what you want is
    owned by the University
  • You may not be able to find an article online,
but it could be found in print using PittCat
  • The Library is here for you, dont be afraid to
    ask for help!
