Nouns

• A noun is a person, place, thing, idea, or
  quality.
• Examples governor, President John F. Kennedy,
  Niagara Falls, love, honesty.

Nouns can be classified as Common Nouns -
general nouns Proper Nouns - specific nouns that
are capitalized Non-count nouns - nouns that
always have a singular form. Count nouns - nouns
that are either singular or plural. Irregular
nouns - nouns that change spelling from singular
to plural forms.
ocean, school, person Atlantic Ocean, Troy High
School, Madonna I saw one deer in the field.
(S) I saw many deer in the field. (P) One state
was affected by the winter storm.(S) All northern
states were affected by the storm. (P) I saw a
goose fly overhead. (S) I saw a flock of geese
flying overhead. (P)

Pronouns

• A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun.
• Pronouns I, she, he, it, we, they, me, her,
  him, us, them, myself, herself, himself,
  themselves, itself
• Example Max was the only dog I ever had. He
  was my best friend.

She is my best friend. Zack threw it over the
bleachers. The principal spoke to us. I gave her
the letter. His story deserved first place. Read
the story to yourself.

Adjectives

• An adjective is a word that describes a noun.
• Examples beautiful, shady, blue, huge, six,
  nervous, that, each, few

Verbs

• A verb is a word tells what the subject does,
  says, thinks, or feels.
• Examples walks, yell, thought, excited

Verbs can be classified as Action Verbs show
the subjects action. Linking Verbs are verbs
that show existence but no action. Helping
Verbs help the main verb. Irregular Verbs
change form from singular to plural.
jog, eat, talk Is, am, are, was, were, have,
had, has, be, been have been talking Helping
verbs Main verb The flower grows a
little each day. The flower grew a half an inch
this week. The flower will grow 8 inches tall.
The flower has grown about 6 inches so far.

• Irregular verbs are verbs that change spelling
  from singular to plural forms.

The verb tense shows the time of the verb.

Adverbs

• An adverb is a word that describes verbs,
  adjectives, or other adverbs. An adverb often
  (not always) ends in an ly. It answers the
  questions HOW? WHEN? WHERE?
• Examples simply, comfortably, hastily, eagerly,
  well, soon, always, upstairs

Adverbs can indicate Time (When?) Manner

Prepositions

• A preposition is a word that shows a relation of
  a noun/pronoun to another word in the sentence.
• Prepositions about, above, across, after,
  against, along, among, around, at, before,
  behind, below, beneath, beside, besides, between,
  beyond, by, down, during, except, for, from, in,
  into, like, of, off, on, over, past, since,
  through, throughout, to, toward, under,
  underneath, until, up, upon, with, within,
  without.
• A preposition always appears in a phrase and is
  usually at the beginning. The noun or pronoun at
  the end of the prepositional phrase is the object
  of the preposition.

• An interjection is an exclamatory word that shows
  a sudden feeling.
• Example Wow! Stop! Cool! No!

trespassing on private property. Yes! I
won. Awesome! That looks great.
