2The Challenge
Your challenge, should you decide to accept it,
is to complete a survey of the books in the
Picture Book of the Year Category of the
Childrens Book Awards and present your findings
and your own opinions in a power point
presentation.
3Task 1
- In the library, find as many of the following
books as possible and read them.
Shutting the Chooks In Libby Gleeson and Ann
James Two Summers John Heffernan and Freya
Blackwood Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat
Stephan Michael King The Violin Man Colin
Thompson Reggie Queen of the Street Margaret
Barbalet and Andrew McLean Cat and Fish Joan
Grant and Neil Curtis
2. Each group member should select one book and
practice reading it aloud as you will be reading
them to younger students in your school.
4Task 2Read to the students
- Organise to visit a Kindergarten, Year 1 or Year
2 class and read the books to the students as a
whole class or in small groups. - After the students have heard all the books you
have, use the survey form to find out which book
they liked the most and why. - Open the Survey form and print a copy to use to
record the student opinions.
5Task 3
- After the group has read the books to the younger
class, get together and discuss your findings. - Was there one book that was much more popular
than the others? What do you think was the reason
for this? - Or was it a much closer result? What do you think
was the reason for this?
6Task 4 Your opinion
- Which of the books is your favourite story?
- Which illustrator did you enjoy the most?
- In which book do you think the illustrations and
the story worked best together? Why?
Present your findings in a short power point
presentation and email to the appropriate person
in your area by 23 August 2004
