Hellenstein Castle
The first parts were built at the beginning of
the 12th century. In 1530 the castle was
destroyed by a huge fire. The reconstruction
during the middle of the 16th century gave the
castle todays appearance. Hellenstein castle was
constructed between 1595 and 1611 at the eastern
side of the old castle based on Heinrich
Schickhardts drafts. Since then the old castle
lost its importance, gradually decayed and was
finally demolished. Today Hellenstein castle
offers a marvellous view over Heidenheim. This
presentation gives you a first impression on our
diverse city of Heidenheim. Culture, sports,
industry and living you can have it all in
Heidenheim!

Location
Heidenheim is located in the centre of the
economic triangle of Stuttgart Nürnberg
Munich. As one of the four business centres in
the east of the federal state of Baden
Württemberg, Heidenheim has a catchment area of
160,000 people. The Chamber of Industry and
Commerce Ostwürttemberg and the University of
Cooperative Education are also located in
Heidenheim .

Demography
The significance of Heidenheim results from its
tradition as an industrial town and its
world-wide reputation as a modern city for any
type of industry. 44.6 of the employees are
workers. 15 work in the trade and traffic
sectors and 40.2 in services .
Since the early 1970s the population of
Heidenheim has been about 50,000 people.

Traffic
The nearest airport is in Stuttgart (80
km) Heidenheim is directly connected to the
German motorway No. A7 (Flensburg Hamburg
Hannover Würzburg Ulm Füssen) and to the A8
(Munich Stuttgart) via the motorway junction
Ulm. In Heidenheim there is an interchange
between the main roads B19 (Würzburg Aalen
Heidenheim Ulm) and B466 (Stuttgart Göppingen
Heidenheim Nördlingen Nürnberg) Its easy
to reach the railway stations for both intercity
express (ICE in Ulm) and InterRegio
(Aalen). Since May 2003 the central bus station
has been opened for the local public transport.
The intelligent local transport concept provides
for comfort and mobility.

The opera festival
The opera festival which takes place at
Hellenstein castle every year in July is known
beyond the borders of Heidenheim. National and
international soloists and famous directors can
be attracted to perform in Heidenheim under our
management. From 2005 to 2007, the opera
festival showed different Mozart operas. From
2008 onwards the new productions will have the
motto Romance in the Knights Hall.

Open-air Theatre
Heidenheims Naturtheater is one of the biggest
open air theatres in Germany which seats 1.100
people. Every year there is a stage performance
for children and one for adults. In 2007 Die
Biene Maya and Don Camillo und Peppone will be
performed. Experience the special atmosphere
around Hellenstein Castle during any of the
performances.

Art Museum
The art museum hosts the gallery of Hermann
Voith which shows a collection of Picassos
graphic reproductions and posters. There are 80
posters and 140 graphic reproductions in various
techniques, such as etching lithographic or
linocut.
Furthermore the art museum shows different
exhibitions of contemporary and classic art.

Fencing
Heidenheim is one of the top locations for
fencing. Every year in spring the biggest and
world famous fencing competition in mens epee
called the Heidenheimer Pokaltakes place here.
Arnd Schmitt, the Olympic champion from
Heidenheim won this competition twice. Ralf
Bißdorf, who won the silver medal at the Olympic
games in Sidney, was also born in Heidenheim. The
fencing centre in Heidenheim is one of the three
biggest centres in Germany. Heidenheim athletes
are also very successful in pentathlon.

Aquarena
The Aquarena is one of the few swimming pools
in the south of Germany whose pool of about 50
meters complies with Olympic standards. There is
an outside pool, a diving pool and a pool for
babies. The sauna area is particularly beautiful
and offers enough space and relaxation rooms. A
lot of fun is guaranteed by the two giant slides.

Mountain bike-Park and X-Country-Course
Next to the ski lift there is a mountain bike
course which entails everything a biker wishes
for. The course, located in a forest, is 7.8
kilometres long and finishes with a downhill
track. The track offers seven jumps and one
freestyle section.

Shepherds - run
Heidenheim is the biggest of only four cities in
Baden-Württemberg which organize shepherds runs.
The municipal authority keeps a special chest for
the shepherds including the shepherd flag and the
crown which is given to the shepherd couple. The
shepherd couple is the fastest woman and the
fastest man who have won the barefooted run. A
big parade including the sports, riding and
music clubs is attended by approximate 2,000
people. The 300-year old shepherd tradition is
kept alive with a ten-day celebration including a
fair.

Culinary Events
Every year in August the culinary festival called
Wirtefest takes place at Hellenstein Castle.
Many well-known chefs present their special
dishes and wines. An exorbitant weekend for
gourmets in a classy open air atmosphere.

Craftwork fair
Almost anything is possible at Hellenstein
castle back to the Middle Ages! Once a year
visitors are able to see craftworks as produced
in mediaeval times.

last weekend in September.

Brenzpark Open Air
Sasha, Xavier Naidoo die Söhne Mannheims,
Melanie Thornton, The Planets, Irean, Jeanette

all of them were on stage in Heidenheim. The
Brenzpark will continue to offer a good

Visit the city of Heidenheim during the annual

Every May the motto is 32 bands in 29 pubs.

Every year in June Heidenheim celebrates an
international street party. Citizens from abroad
present their specialities. Samba, Döner Kebab,

University of Cooperative Education
The University of Cooperative Education in
Heidenheim offers study programmes in Business
Administration, Management in Media and Services,
Management in Trade and Industry, in Engineering
and Social Sciences. During their studies
students acquire theoretical knowledge and
practical skills. After three years they are
awarded a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of
Science. The University of Cooperative Education
has a student body of about 1,400 students, which
will increase to 1,800 students by 2010. A new
building is planned to provide for the needs of
the increasing number of students.

The music school was founded 28 years ago. In
autumn 2003, the school moved to a new location,
the Olgaschule (a former school) in
downtown. The main focus is the work with

Industry
The typical type of industry in Heidenheim and
the eastern region of Baden Württenberg is the
production industry. The Chamber of Industry and
Commerce of Ostwürttemberg is located in
Heidenheim. One of its tasks is to support adults
through further education.
Apart from the city administration, the hospital
and banks, most industrial companies have more
than 200 employees. A lot of smaller firms are
either suppliers or involved in special machine

Paper Technology Centre (PTC)
The PTC is the most modern paper science centre
worldwide. Between January 2005 and May 2006, the
PTC was built in Heidenheim and it is not only
used by the Voith company but also by its
partners and universities.
The centrepiece of the PTC is the test paper
machine. With its length of 90 metres and a
height of a three-storey house it is still
regarded as a small paper machine. It is used
to explore new manufacturing processes and
improvements. The façade of the PTC is an
architectural masterpiece. The curved roof
resembles a paper web in a paper machine.

After the redevelopment of the city centre and
the facelift for the Schnaitheimer and
Erchenstraße, the Eugen-Jaeckle and
Johann-Matthäus-Voith squares, the next project
involved the Graben street. A service point
between the pedestrian zone and the city hall was
developed.
Special lights and sophisticated lightning
systems make Heidenheim light up.

The concept was right! And then the inhabitants
of Heidenheim contributed a great deal to the
success of the horticultural exhibition 2006.

Heidenheim with their flower show. Heidenheim

Brenzpark
The Brenzpark has emerged from the horticultural
exhibition. The change from a former industrial
waste land to the location for the horticultural
exhibition 2006 and now finally to the Brenzpark
is completed. Now the inhabitants of Heidenheim
and their guests have the possibility to escape
from the daily routine and have a few quite
moments in the green heart of Heidenheim

telecommunications office, the museum shows
historical parts of monumental Roman buildings.
The excavations, started in the early 1980s,
