K12 Application Process
  • Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career
    Development (Roadmap) K12 Program
  • Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in
    Womens Health (BIRWCH) K12 Program
  • Multidisciplinary Advisory Committee (MAC) and
    Program Directors will assign successful
    applicants to the K12 program felt to be most
    appropriate

  • Will post materials to web site
  • Letters of recommendation should be submitted
    directly to us
  • All other components should be submitted as a
    single pdf file

Eligibility
  • Earned doctoral degree
  • Commitment to career in clinical research
  • Able to commit 75 effort (with limited
    exceptions) to didactic, research and career
    development activities
  • Be at an early stage of an academic career
    senior fellow or full-time junior faculty member
    (typically no more than 2-3 years after
    completion of training)
  • May not have been Principal Investigator of an
    R01, R29, sub-project of a Program Project or
    Center grant, or career development grant.
    Having been PI of an R03 or R21 is permitted
  • US citizen, non-citizen national, or lawfully
    admitted for permanent residence
  • In accordance with NIH policies, preference given
    to applicants who are planning to conduct their
    research at domestic sites

  • Participation in first-year mentored research,
    including human subjects and vertebrate (4-page
    maximum, not including human subjects,
    verterbrate, and references)
  • Description of applicants independent research
    project (4-page maximum)

  • Team mentoring packet, including mentoring
    agreement
  • Letters of support
  • Personal data form
  • Copy of permanent residency card (non-US citizens
    only)
  • Checklist
  • Note Appendices are not allowed. Applications
    exceeding page limits will be returned without
    being reviewed.

Evaluation Criteria
  • Quality of the application
  • Potential to conduct innovative,
    multidisciplinary clinical research
  • Background, qualifications and experience
  • Commitment to a multidisciplinary research
    career
  • Enthusiasm of the reference letters with respect
    to candidates qualifications and potential
  • Mentor team (can include non-UNC investigators)
  • Experienced
  • Different disciplines, specialties or
    subspecialties
  • Appropriate for the applicants career
    development and research
  • Demonstrated commitment to the applicants career
    and research goals
  • Developed a feasible and appropriate team
    mentoring plan

  • Research plan
  • Feasible, significant, and leads to a career as
    an independent investigator
  • Includes submission of a grant by the end of Year
    2
  • Institutional commitment
  • The research unit with which the applicant will
    be affiliated is able to provide an excellent
    multidisciplinary research environment
  • Commitment by the Department, Division, and/or
    School to the applicants career
