to and from calculator and computer

This will explain how to
  • Create a folder to store Notes on the computer
  • Type Notes on the computer and
  • Transfer those Notes from the computer to the
    calculator.

Steps to storing Notes on the calculator
  • Create a folder eg. Calc Notes on your C
    drive to contain the notes.
  • Create a file name for the notes eg. Chem1
    using the calculator.
  • Transfer the empty Chem1 file to the folder.
  • Open up the Chem 1 file in MS Notepad and type
    in your notes.
  • Save the file to C\\Calc notes\\Chem 1
  • Transfer the Chem1notes file from the computer
    to the calculator.

Set up the folder to contain the Notes
  • The first task is to create a folder on your
    computer drive to hold the Notes eg. Calc notes
  • Using Windows Explorer create a new Directory
    containing the folders
  • A typical computer directory would be
    C\\Calculator files\\Calc notes\\
  • The Calc notes folder will contain multiple
    files such as Chem 1 notes.

Create a new file in Notepad
  • Go to Note Catalog on the calculator and press
    NEW. Fig 2a
  • Name the new file Chem 1 and press OK Fig 2b
  • This new file is empty. Fig 2c
  • We will transfer it to the computer.

  • Using the Directories window open the
    Calculator Files folder by double clicking on
    it. See Fig 3a.
  • You should now see theCalc notes " folder that
    you previously created see Fig 3b.

  • Double click on this to open it up.Fig 4a
  • The files window will be blank as the Chem1
    file is yet to be transferred from the
    calculator.
  • Note Fig 4b Calc notes folder is empty.

Transferring the File
  • Next step is to click on the connect button to
    connect the calculator to the computer. Fig 4a
  • Go to the Note Catalog on the calculator and
    highlight the Chem1 file. Then press SEND.

Sending the file
  • A window will ask send to HP38G or Disk drive
  • Highlight Disk drive and press OK
  • A window will ask Send now or Pick location
  • Highlight Send now and press OK

Transferring the file
  • A window will say Disk drive not prepared for
    transfer. Initialise directory
  • Press YES (this creates DIR and CUR files
    that allow the calculator to talk to the
    computer).
  • Having pressed YES the transfer will proceed.

How to type notes into the Chem1 file
  • Then open the the aplet development kit by
    double clicking on its icon Adk.exe. The Aplet
    development kit is located in C\\Aplet
    Development

Locate and open the new Chem1 file.
  • Use the File and choose Open
  • Use the dialogue box to locate the Chem1 file
  • Open this in the usual way

Type notes into the new Chem1 file.
  • Type in the notes
  • Many variables and characters are available
  • Save your work in the usual way

Transfer notes to calculator
  • Transfer the Chem1notes file from the computer
    to the calculator.

Transferring the file
  • Open up the Serial interface kit
  • Locate the Chem1 file using the directories
    window
  • C\calculator files\calculator notes\
  • Open up the folder to see the Chem1 ,
    hp38dir.000 andhp38dir.cur files.

Transferring the File
  • Next step is to click on the connect button to
    connect the calculator to the computer. Fig 11a
  • Go to the Note Catalog on the calculator and
    highlight the Chem1 file. Then press RECV.

Receiving the Aplet
  • A window will ask receive from HP38G or Disk
    drive
  • Highlight Disk drive and press OK
  • A window will say briefly Preparing to get
    note
  • A new window will appear with the Chem1 file
    listed
  • Highlight this file and press OK.
  • A window will say briefly Getting from file
    CHEM1000.000

File status
  • When the notes file is transferred back to the
    calculator this file over-writes the file of the
    same name on the calculator.
  • If the file name is not listed the new file will
    simply appear on the NOTE CATALOG.
