George F. Kennan and Containment
  • Kennan was a member of the foreign service,
stationed in the USSR since 1924.
  • Sent the long telegram to Truman in 1946.
  • He recommended that the U.S. should adopt a
policy of Containment toward the Soviets.
Every time the Soviets make an aggressive move,
the U.S. should put a barrier to further
    aggression.
  • Those barriers include sending money or troops,
and improving the world image of the U.S.
  • He based this conclusion on Marxist philosophy.

5
Truman Doctrine
  • Anytime freedom loving people face a Communist
threat, the United States will help defend those
    people.
  • That help could include money, arms, or troops.
