Title: The Circulatory System

1
The Circulatory System
  • Chapter 51

2
The Basics
  • It carries your blood!
  • (nutrients, gases, temperature, and hormones)
  • Arteries, arterioles (from the heart)
  • Cappilaries
  • Veins, venules (to the heart)
  • Lymphatic System

3
Structure of System
  • Arteries elastic sheath, four basic layers
  • Veins same layers, collapsible, larger
  • Pressure
  • Capillaries only endothelium, located throughout
    body, precapillary sphincter

4
Makeup of the Blood
  • Plasma metabolites, salts/ions, and proteins
  • Erythrocytes red blood cells
  • Leukocytes granulocytes (neutrophils, basophils,
    eosinophils, monocyte?macrophages) To the
    pictures
  • Platelets (clotting process)
  • Want to visualize it?

5
Evolution of the Heart
  • Peristaltic Pump
  • One-cycle Chamber Pump (fish)
  • Pulmonary Circulation (amphibians and reptiles)

6
Circulation (general)
  • Generally, the blood moves after aerated by
lungs flows through pulmonary veins to left
atrium, bicuspid shuts, into left ventricle and
    to aorta and coronary arteries
  • From veins (vena cava) into right atrium, then
right ventricle, to pulmonary artery to lungs
  • Confused???

7
Heart Contraction
  • SA node- spontaneous depolarization with a
    regular rhythm
  • Wave through cells of left and right atria
  • AV node- slender tissue that connects
    atria to ventricles
  • Ventricles contract almost .1 seconds after
atria, allows atria to empty contents into
    ventricles before ventricles contract
