Power Supply Design Check List
  • Does the system require AC, DC or both?
  • What is the manufacturers recommended operating
    voltage range (tolerance) of the equipment?
  • What is the total current draw (load) of the
    system and/or each zone being powered in both
    stand-by and alarm?

Output Power Protection - Fuses
Fuses protect electrical devices and components
from over-currents and short circuits that occur
in improperly operating circuits. When
current reaches a predetermined magnitude for a
fixed period of time, current flow is interrupted
through the melting of an internal element.

Output Power Protection - Fuses
  • Pros
  • Fast acting and accurate.
  • A one (1) amp fuse will blow at 1.25 amp - 1.5
    amp, in approximately 1 second.
  • Cons
  • They are designed for one time use and must be
    replaced.

Output Power Protection - PTCs
A Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistor
(PTC), acts as a type of circuit
breaker. As the PTCs current rating is
exceeded it slowly heats up until the temperature
threshold is reached causing a dramatic increase
in resistance, which in effect opens the circuit.
It will reset itself after overload is removed
and the device cools down.

  • Pros
  • Provides Class 2 Rated Power Limited Outputs.
  • Device is reusable.
  • Cons
  • Temperature sensitive.
  • Not an accurate device.
  • In some cases the slow and inaccurate response
    could
  • jeopardize delicate electronic equipment.
  • Note When used where ambient temperatures are
    too high PTCs will trip prematurely. When used
    where ambient temperatures are too low the PTCs
    trip will be delayed.
