Pre-History
  • In 1976 a group of scientists discovered
footprints preserved in stone. They believe the
footprints to be about 3.5 million years old
  • The footprints excited them because they were
almost identical to those made by modern humans
  • This helps scientists understand early hominids.

4
  • Hominids Term given to modern humans and to
earlier groups that may have included ancestors
    or relatives of modern humans

5
Stone Age Hunting and Gathering
  • The stone age was a period of time when hominids
    made tools mainly from stone

6
  • Tools were also made from bone and wood
  • The Stone Age lasted hundreds of thousands of
years until metal was used for tools
  • Stone age was divided up into three periods
  • Old Stone Age
  • Middle Stone Age
  • New Stone Age

7
The Old Stone Age(Paleolithic)
  • Did not know how to farm
  • They were hunters-gatherers (hunted animals and
    gathered wild plants)
  • Almost all of human pre-history took place during
    this time
  • Originated in Africa
  • Learned how to create fire
  • Moved to areas with colder climates (around the
    world)
  • Became nomads
  • Nomads are people who have no settled home and
moved around to places where they could find food

8
Middle Stone Age(Mesolithic)
  • Used more refined tools
  • Farming began
  • People in Southwest Asia discovered if they
planted the seeds of wild grasses, new crops
would growThis started the New Stone Age
  • Movement around the world

9
New Stone Age (Neolithic)
  • Grow own foods
  • made pottery
  • Women were responsible for growing foods and
    gathering foods
  • Men were responsible for hunting
  • Pastoral nomads They raised livestock and
traveled place to place in search of grazing
    areas for animals

10
  • Some places were better for farming. People
found that soil, water, and the length of the
growing season was good for plants
  • Chinese farmers planted and grew rice and other
    crops
  • In Central America corn, beans, and squash were
    grown

11
  • Domesticate Tame wild animals for human use.
  • Humans learned to tame wild animals and first
    domesticated animal (dog)
  • Domesticate plants or adapt wild plants for human
    use
