Match Pros // Cons
  • Pros
  • Desired by applicants (present day residents)
  • Transparent process
  • Allows applicants to interview and consider
    multiple programs
  • Should promote better match of candidates with
    programs
  • May attract more candidates
  • Waivers can be obtained for couples, special
    situations
  • Cons
  • Requires cooperation of more than 75 of programs
  • Match violations may occur and undermine faith in
    system
  • Special situations will require specific waiver
  • Unclear if there is an advantage to a Spring
Match (13-14 months pre start) vrs Fall Match
    (7-8 months pre start)

8
NRMP Rules
  • 75 rule
  • Beginning in July 2001 and each year thereafter,
in order for matching services to be provided,
    each specialty is requested to
  • verify that at least 75 of the programs with
available positions in a given year will be
    registered for the match,
  • encourage programs to actively participate by
submitting a rank order list, and
  • have at least 75 of the available positions
within the specialty registered with the NRMP.
  • Waivers possible for special circumstances
    (couples, Med-Peds, Research track, etc)
  • Violations
  • Applicant
  • Program

9
Implementation Issues
  • Timing
  • Spring (13-14 months before starting)
  • Fall (7-8 months before starting)
  • Need for more education about NRMP for Programs
    and PDs
  • Participation needs to be widespread (75 rule)
