One-third of Children Develop Post-concussion Mental Health Issues

Description:

According to many pediatric neurologists, it is observed that one-third of kids suffer mental health concerns after a concussion. Not just do children grow mental health problems, but they also insist for many years after post-injury. It’s time pediatric neurology should concentrate on mental health issues connected with post-concussion. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

One-third of Children Develop Post-concussion
Mental Health Issues
According to various pediatric neurologists, it
is seen that one-third of children face mental
health issues after a concussion. Not only do
children develop mental health problems, but they
also persist for several years after
post-injury. Therefore, it is suggested by
Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI)
that mental health should be a part of standard
pediatric concussion assessment and management.
2
New research came in the light which discussed
the connection between delayed recovery after
injury and mental health problems in children. As
per the published literature review in 1980 to
June 2020, which researched approximately 90,000
children from 0-18 years of age, from countries
such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand revealed
children who had concussion were due to sports
injuries(29.5 percent), falling (42.3 percent)
and car accidents(15.5 percent).
The research also claimed that 36.5 percent of
children experienced anxiety, depression, and
post-traumatic stress, and 20 percent of
children experienced aggression, attention
problems, and hyperactivity after a concussion
compared to children who sustained other injuries
like arm fractures.
3
Whats more surprising is that pre-existing
health problems also trigger post-concussion
mental health issues in children, as per
different child neurologists. Other research
papers suggested that 29 percent of children
with pre-existing mental health problems received
a new mental health diagnosis post-concussion.
According to MCRI researcher Alice Gornall,
concussion is an alarming issue in children as
?nding problems associated with concussion remain
a challenge for various child neurologists.
She highlighted one such example from Australia.
Emma has been seeking mental health support
after having two concussions in two years. She
faces various issues such as anxiety and
headaches and cannot do the simplest tasks, such
as walking. She could not concentrate on her
studies and felt demotivated to go to school for
a long time.
After seeing such cases, mental health has become
a part of concussion management which helps
children recover quickly.
Different pediatric neurologists conduct sessions
include physiotherapy and psychology treatments
that treat common symptoms such as headache,
fatigue and return to exercise, sports, and
schools. Child neurology should integrate
assessment and mental health prevention with
standard concussion management to help children
recover from trauma post-concussion.
4
Its time pediatric neurology should focus on
mental health problems associated with
post-concussion. Early diagnosis and treatments
are imperative as they can have a prolonged
effect on childrens health if left untreated.
