Title: Shape, Form and Space

1
Shape, Form and Space
2
THE ELEMENT OF SHAPE
  • Shape is a two-dimensional area that is defined
    in some way.
  • Shapes can be defined by a line, contrasting
    colors or contrasting textures.
  • There are three types of shape
  • Geometric
  • Organic
  • Free-Form

3
GEOMETRIC SHAPE uses mathematical formula or
angular shapes.
  • Piet Mondrian uses geometric shape in Broadway
Boogie to symbolize the setup of the New York
    city streets.
  • In Pablo Picassos Three Musicians, geometric
shape is used to show human forms.

4
ORGANIC SHAPE represents objects found in
nature.
  • In Hibiscus with Plumeria, Georgia OKeefe uses
soft, organic shape to represent the flowers.
  • Vincent van Gogh uses flowing, organic shape to
    represent The Olive Trees.

5
FREE-FORM SHAPE abstract and unidentifiable
shapes.
  • Although the shapes in Joan Miros Hand Catching
a Bird represent natural forms, they are
considered free-form because of their lack of
    immediate identification.

6
THE ELEMENT OF FORM
  • A form is an object having three dimensions.
  • Not only do they have length and width, but they
    also have depth.
  • The illusion of form or a three-dimensional space
    can be created five ways
  • OVERLAPPING
  • SIZE DIFFERENCE
  • PLACEMENT
  • SHADING
  • LINEAR PERSPECTIVE

7
  • OVERLAPPING- Placing objects in front of or
behind one another to create the illusion of a
    3-D space.
  • SIZE DIFFERENCE- Objects that are closer appear
to be larger than objects that are further away.
  • PLACEMENT- Objects that are closer are lower on
the picture plane than objects that are further
    away.
  • Salvador Dalí. The Persistence of Memory. 1931.
    Oil on canvas, 9 1/2 x 13"

8
SHADING TECHNIQUES
  • Blending- a smooth transition in value.

9
SHADING TECHNIQUES
  • Stipple- shading using dots.

10
SHADING TECHNIQUES
  • Hatching- Uses parallel lines to add value
  • Cross-hatching- uses intersecting lines to add
    value

11
LINEAR PERSPECTIVE
  • Linear perspective is a mathematical system for
creating the illusion of space and distance on a
    flat surface.
  • The system originated in Florence, Italy in the
    early 1400s.
  • The artist and architect Filippo Brunelleschi
    first demonstrated its principles.

12
  • The HORIZON LINE is where the sky appears to meet
    the ground.
  • The VANISHING POINT should be located on the
horizon line. The vanishing point is where all
converging lines appear to come together. To the
left you see one and two point linear
    perspective.
  • CONVERGING LINES are "visual rays" helping the
viewer's eye to connect points around the edges
    of the picture plane
  • to the vanishing point.
