It Starts With the Air

• Factories (power plants etc.) release Oxides of
  sulfur (SO2) and cars release oxides of nitrogen
  (NO, NO2) as byproducts.

A Deadly Mix

• When these oxides mix with water in the
  atmosphere (water vapor) they combine to produce
  acids.
• When it rains the rain may have sulfurous and
  nitric acid in it.

What is Acid Rain?

• Acid rain is rain that has a pH of less than 5.6.
• Acids are corrosive they eat away at things,
  dissolving them.

Effects

• Acid rain can lower the pH of bodies of water
  which can kill all types of life in the water
  (plants, frogs, fish, snails etc).

• Acid rain can release metals from the rocks in
  the ground and carry them to bodies of water
  (runoff, streams). These metals interfere with
  how fish breath and they die.
• Acid rain can kill trees and plants.
• Acid rain can erode buildings and statues.
