Slide info
  • Purpose to test a control system for a n x m
    array of heating elements
  • High current
  • Fast switching time
  • Must be scalable and inexpensive
  • Process utilized a row-column control system
    (see schematic slides)
  • Results the designed system satisifies our
    requirements (put pics or something)

5
Process (explaining how it works)
  • Columns are tied to ground by the solid-state
    relays
  • Rows are tied to 120V-AC by the solid state
    relays
  • Control signals from a microcontroller are
amplified and fed to the relays
  • Light bulbs were used instead of coils because
they are same wattage and much safer.
  • By switching on a row and column pair, a single
    light can be turned on
  • Ex turning on row 0 and column 0 will turn on
    light (0,0)
  • By rapidly switching between multiple row and
columns many cells can be turned on and power
output can be controlled by time-averaging the on
    signals (like a PWM)

Cost Estimate
  • 15 x 10 rows 25 relays _at_ 10 per relay -gt 250
  • Orc microcontroller 300
  • Computer 600
  • Wiring and connectors 30
  • Total 1680
  • Applying 10 rule 168
  • Using a task-appropriate microcontroller and
    computer 90
