Aims of the project
  • To identify, record and preserve local migrants
    heritage
  • To promote contributions of local migrant
    families into economic and social life
  • To ensure migrants heritage is adequately
    presented in the Librarys collections,
    activities and programs
  • To establish close contact with the local diverse
    communities through their active involvement in
    the Librarys innovative projects

    share their vast migration heritage with a wider
    community and encourage their ongoing input in
    the project
  • To further reach out to local Culturally and
    Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities and
    promote Librarys resources and facilities to
    them
  • To provide greater customer satisfaction across
    the local community

Stages of the project
  • First stage 2003, 27 entries
  • Second stage 2004, 16 entires, 35 photos
  • Third stage 2006, 57 entires, 14 photos
  • All entries were bound into booklets and
    distributed to all the participants, community
    organisations and all library locations.
  • Booklets were also made available on the
    library website and for purchase at all library
    locations.

Project management
  • The Project team in consultation with Randwick
    Multicultural Advisory Committee held a number of
    brainstorming sessions to identify aims and
    outcomes of the project, implementation stages,
    judging process, promotion and launch of the
    project.

Staff training
  • Cultural awareness staff training
  • Staff information session on demographical and
    cultural make up of the local area
  • Staff briefing sessions on the purpose of the
    Migrants Story project and ways of promoting it
    to the community
  • Provision of further information at regular staff
    meetings on conditions of entry, formats, etc
  • Training for new and casual staff on the purpose
    of the project

Improved contact with the local community
  • Migrants Story talks in community organisations
  • Burge Centre Holocaust survivors
  • TAFE Multicultural Education Unit
  • Eastern suburbs Evening College creative
    writing course
  • Direct contacts with the local community groups
    e.g. Greek and Italian communities
  • Attending to numerous individual enquiries (in
    person, over the phone, via e-mail) from local
    residents about the Migrants Story project

Launch
  • Over 70 local residents participated
  • Exhibition of the entries and photographs
  • Award presentation by the Mayor
  • Speeches by the Chair of Randwick Multicultural
    Advisory Committee, Chair of the WGMLS and other
    VIPs
  • Cultural performance dancing and music by
    ethnic groups
  • Refreshments, socialising and feedback

Service improvement
  • 48 increase in LOTE collection circulation
    statistics
  • 9 increase in CALD membership statistics
  • Record number of hits on the Library website
  • Following the increase in circulation new library
    guides in 5 languages were developed
  • This project has generated an increased interest
    in library resources, facilities and programs
    among CALD communities. They have subsequently
    expressed an interest in improving their English
    level proficiency. English conversation classes
    were introduced.

Ongoing viability of the project
  • An overwhelming response from the local diverse
    communities has identified a need to continue
    this exciting series of personal stories.
  • It is planned to further expand this successful
    project in future, by applying for a community
    heritage grant to fund the collection of oral
    stories to complement Randwick Librarys Local
    History section.
  • The success of this project has raised awareness
    of Randwick City Council as to the volume and
    variety of direct services provided by the
    Library
