First Things First
  • Sign up for unemployment
  • Review your finances
  • Take advantage of every benefit offered by your
    former employer (outplacement, COBRA, severance,
    relocation, etc)
  • Establish a home office and go to work
  • Establish personal goals exercise, lose weight,
    professional development
  • No depression or whining please

  • Watch for scams - insurance sales

  • Recruiters dominate the internet if your resume
    is searchable, they will find you
  • Get used to lots of applications and no feedback
    it is a volume business
  • Unless you are serious about the position and the
    location, dont apply
  • Search firms are employer paid, and can be quite
    selective
  • Dont forget recruiters who advertise in APICS
    Advantage

  • Make a list of all family members, friends,
    former associates
  • Contact everyone on your list to let them know
    your status and ask for leads
  • Emails are OK, but personal phone calls may bring
    the most results
  • Provide a resume to your references
  • Family, friends, former associates are the most
    effective search engine

  • Market yourself to target markets companies
  • Chamber of Commerce directories
  • Single page resume and cover letter to key
    decision makers
  • Follow-up 1 2 weeks later with a cover letter
    and 2 page resume to HR manager
  • Follow-up 1 2 weeks later with phone calls
  • Expand your search
  • Identify target companies and apply for positions
    on-line
  • You will need a txt file of your resume for most

  • Purchase a spiral notebook keep meticulous
    notes on job applications, conversations, contact
    info (name/no.)
  • Print off job sheets for every position applied
    for and file in 3-ring notebook
  • Include your cell phone on resume and on-line
    applications (be accessible)
  • If you dont have a fax, visit your local
    Kinkos/UPS store and get their number

  • Certification does make a difference CPIM,
    CSCP, CIRM, C.P.M.
  • Develop any weakness six sigma, lean
    manufacturing, interview skills, etc
  • Develop your mind your body stay active,
