  • 13,00 staff

4
Where we are
  • Some excellent practices
  • A tendency to focus on micro issues the
    immediate problems

Human Factors in LUL
  • Projects carried out as required within
    directorates

    in
  • trains

  • Marketing and Planning
  • SQE

6
What we are doing
  • Human Factors in cabs

8
Human Factors in Cabs
  • Staff complaints
  • RSI
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Noise
  • Vibration
  • Too hot/ too cold
  • Incidents
  • SPADs
  • other incidents

9
HF in cabs - cont.
  • All Stock all lines
  • Guidelines for new stock
  • Modifications to existing stock
  • Observe use in service
  • View and debate issues in depot

10
A new way of working
  • Project steering group
  • Local consultation on a stock by stock basis

What we are doing
  • Human Factors in cabs
  • Human Factors in control rooms
  • New projects under PPP
  • Human Factors in QRA
  • Signals passed at danger
  • Work-life balance rostering

13
Signals passed at danger
  • Stable trend of SPADs
  • Approx 65 Category A SPADs per month
  • Protected by the train stop
  • Massive variability between our lines

14
Signals passed at danger
  • LUL in certain locations run over Railtrack lines
  • Concerns raised by Railtrack and HMRI on Bakerloo
Line SPAD Performance north of Queens Park
  • Need to understand the risks associated with
differences in driving on LUL and Railtrack
    infrastructure

15
Interoperability ?
  • Our train operators use RT LUL infrastructures
are the differences in performance linked to
these differences in infrastructure, and is
special effort required for them to work safely
    effectively.

16
Potential Factors
  • Difference in signalling between 2 and 3 aspect,
the length of signal sections and what this means
    to the train driver
  • Tunnel Operation v Open sections
  • Differences in Train Operator workload
  • Reliance on Train safety systems
  • Different types / lack of train safety systems

17
What we are doing
  • Human Factors in cabs
  • Human Factors in control rooms
  • New projects under PPP
  • Human Factors in QRA
  • Signals passed at danger
  • Work-life balance rostering

18
Stations
  • Many projects ongoing
  • Stations being modernised/refurbished
  • Installing
  • new ticketing machines
  • digital radio
  • PCs
  • etc

19
Human Factors
  • Multiple bits of new kit
  • DSE
  • Duplication/replication
  • Space allocation
  • Good practice ?

20
What we are doing
  • Human Factors in cabs
  • Human Factors in control rooms
  • New projects under PPP
  • Customer facing human factors
  • Signals passed at danger
  • Work-life balance rostering

21
Customer facing human factors
  • E1035 does not address customer facing issues
  • Developing human factors guidelines for
    customer-facing activities
  • Examples include signage, customer flows,
    customer help points etc

22
Lift interface accessibility
23
Visibility sightlines
  • Information needed
  • Position when looking
  • Time to see / time to read

24
Issues
  • Ensure Human Factors is integrated into project
    planning
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate consultation to
    increase uptake of the findings
  • Lack of knowledge is not always the issue
  • How to implement findings

25
Conclusions
