16But, we must have a goal AND a plan!
17Ground Rules
Hillsdale Prep
18- One goal should be to have a common county-wide
school calendar and a county-wide high school
schedule in place by the start of the 2008-2009
school year. - Meeting this and other goals of the Hillsdale
County Leadership Initiative will require an
understanding that we can either impact the
future or wait for it to happen! - Which option will be more painful????

Success.

21Common Calendar
- County Common Calendar Should Specify
- Vacation Periods
- Professional Development Days
- Semester Start/End
- Grade Periods
- Parent/Teacher Conference Dates
22The Schedule Dilemma
23Rationale for Common Calendar and Schedule
- Individually, we cannot continue to provide for
ALL the needs of ALL our students. Collectively,
maybe we can! - We could expand the quantity, nature, and
availability of class offerings through best use
of existing teaching assets. - It would significantly ease the transition for
those students who change schools during the
school year if the schedule, calendar, and
curriculum were the same. - It could reduce the number of students changing
schools to find an easier way to graduate. - We could expand the possibilities for effective
use of Interactive Television (ITV) assets. - We could open opportunities for shared classes or
shared teachers thus expanding offerings. - We could allow for the maximization of existing
vocational program contact time. - We could simplify scheduling of extracurricular
programs. - We could increase collaboration and coordination
between districts down to the classroom, grade-
and subject-matter level. - We could maximize professional development
opportunities in specific subjects, grade levels
or areas of need.

26Michigan Employer Survey
- 28 percent of employers project that their
companies will reduce hiring of new entrants with
only a high school diploma over the next five
years. - 49.5 percent said the percentages of two-year
college graduates they hire would increase. - Almost 60 percent said their hires of four-year
college graduates would increase. - 42 percent said their hires of post-graduates
would increase over the next five years. - "This study should serve as an alert to
educators, policy makers and those concerned with
U.S. economic competitiveness that we may be
facing a skills shortage," said Susan R.
Meisinger, President and CEO of the Society for
Human Resource Management. In a knowledge based
economy a talented workforce with communication
and critical thinking skills is necessary for
organizations and the U.S. to be successful."
