12How do your donations help?
13Better Health Care - China
- In Puding, a very poor and remote
- county in southwest China, more than
- 90 of the people suffer from fluorosis,
- a preventable yet irreversible disease
- that mottles the teeth brown and
- deteriorates bones, including the spine.
- Some people become so hunchbacked
- that they can no longer work at all.
- Oxfam has started health education
- and community projects in Puding,
- helping villagers prevent fluorosis and
- improve their health.
14Fairer Social Policy Hong Kong
- Recently, the injustice of the low wages
- and long working hours of government-
- contract cleaners has aroused substantial
- public concern having a job does not
- necessarily mean one is not poor.
- Oxfam is supporting a local organization to
- protect the basic rights of these workers
- and to prevent exploitation. This
- organization is lobbying for policy change
- to effect long term positive change for all
- workers in Hong Kong.
15Safe Water - Malawi
- In Chikwawa, the climate is so dry that the only
- source of water is underground. People used to
- dig wells, but their tools and techniques were
so - basic that the wells were always too shallow to
- supply enough water. Contamination was
- common , from insects or cow dung.
- In 2003, Oxfam started a community programme
- to help people build a water pump in Chikwawa
- that can reach down 10 or more meters. Now
- the water supply is more stable, and the quality
- safer for human consumption.
16Sustainable Livelihood - India
- In Gahrwal, a mountainous part of
- northern India, land is barren,
- resources are few and even though they
- do outside manual labour for extra
- income, most people still do not have
- enough to eat for nine months of the
- year.
- Since joining an Oxfam-supported
- integrated project with fish ponds, bee
- hives, fruit trees and a grain mill,
- people in Gahrwal now have a better
- income, a better livelihood.
17Helping the fight against poverty
- Since 1976, Oxfam Hong Kong has supported poverty
- alleviation and emergency relief projects in more
than 60 - countries. Hundreds of thousands of poor people
have - been able to improve their livelihoods through
the - provision of basic facilities, basic education,
healthcare, - training, small loans, rehabilitation programmes
and - other community projects. However, there are
still - millions of people living in poverty, and they
really need - your support
18- Your support means a lot to us and
- Oxfam Hong Kong. Please act now!
