WELCOME

Women with Disabilities and Development
  • Disability Development Team
  • World Bank, HDNSP

3
Why Disability Matters?
  • Essential for inclusive and sustainable
    development
  • Neglecting disability comes at a high cost
  • Investing in disability yields significant returns

4
World Bank and Disability
  • The work on disability as a development issue
initiated at the Bank in 2002
  • It was a response to a strong pressure from
    disabled people organizations, civil society
    organizations, and Bank members
  • The Bank has evolved into the global knowledge
    and learning resource on DD

Gender Equality and the World Bank
  • Gender equality an issue of development
    effectiveness.
  • Gender inequality as a barrier for economic
    growth and poverty reduction.
  • The promotion of gender equality has become an
objective of the Banks development assistance.

8
Women, Disability and Development a Puzzle yet
to be put Together
  • An estimated 300 million women and girls with
    disabilities
  • Most live in developing countries
  • Anecdotal evidence suggests their exclusion
  • Yet, knowledge about them is sparse

9
How come we do not know more?
  • Those committed to gender equity, often fail to
consider disability, and those committed to
disability equity, often fail to consider gender,
thus unwittingly rendering a majority of girls
    and women with disabilities invisible.

10
Closing theKnowledge Gap
  • Knowledge for evidence based policies
  • We hope that this event will help us identify
priority areas for research and evidence
    gathering
  • .. AND

long enough.
