Title: THE GOSPEL EPIC:

1
THE GOSPEL EPIC CHRIST DIED FOR OUR
SINS Isaiah 534 - 6
2
Christ took, carried, and bore all our sins
himself for the purpose of our redemption and
reconciliation with God. He took upon himself the
suffering which we should have had to bear. He
took the consequences of our sin and bore them in
our place. He took our judgment.
3
God imputed the guilt of our sins to Christ, and
he, in our place, bore the punishment that we
deserve. This was a full payment for sins, which
satisfied both the wrath and the righteousness of
God, so that He could forgive sinners without
compromising His own holy standard

The doctrine of penal substitution states that
God gave himself in the person of his Son to
suffer instead of us the death, punishment and
curse due to fallen humanity as the penalty for
sin
- Steve Jeffery, Michael Ovey, Andrew Sach,
Pierced for Our Transgressions, page 21

sin, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God.

becoming a curse for usfor it is written,
Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the
righteous for the unrighteous, that he might
bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh
but made alive in the spirit.
- I Peter 318

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our
sorrows.

pains he suffered them

In verse 4a it is not really sin that is spoken
of, but the evil which is consequent upon human
sin, although now always the direct consequence
of the sins of individuals.
- C.F. Keil and F. Delitsch, Commentary on the
Old Testament, Volume 7, page 316

was crushed for our iniquities upon him was the
chastisement that brought us peace, and with his
stripes we are healed.

sin, so that in him we might become the

All we like sheep have gone astray we have
turnedevery oneto his own way and the Lord has
laid on him the iniquity of us all.
- Isaiah 536
14
The blood of Jesus is flowing out to sinners of
all kinds, taking form them their guilt, their
shame, their loss, their tears and despair, and
giving them a whole new life. Jesus is saying to
you right now, I dont want you to bear your
burden one moment longer.
- Ray Ortlund, Jr., Isaiah God Saves Sinner,
pages 357 - 358
15
Let my chastisement give you peace, Let my
stripes heal you. We are all like stupid sheep,
wandering off from him through our own futile
self-remedies and self-righteous excuses. Who can
deny it? But look what God has done. God has laid
on Christ the iniquity of us all. Believe it and
entrust your guilt to him
