ENVS 295 Environmental Management Systems
  • Part 1 International EMS Models
  • Part 2 Field Trip Reports
  • Part 3 Critique Last Years Report

2
What About Other Campuses?
  • Third party review is a key component of making
an EMS meaningful, so it would be interesting to
know if other campuses are doing something like
    this
  • Would they know what were talking about?

3
2006 Benchmark Survey of EMS in US
63 are interested in or are developing an EMS
4
U.S. Higher EducationCumulative reported EMS
start

EMS Models
  • ISO 14000 the analytical approach
  • Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)
  • a European wide voluntary regulation encouraging
    the adoption of environmental management
    stakeholder involvement is emphasized
  • BS 8555 gradual approach
  • Eco Campus gradual approach with awards and
    aspect scheme

6
EcoCampus Aspects

  • Draft environmental policy

  • Control of records
  • Internal audit
  • Management review

9
Keep in mind
  • The EMS and related tools are just that - tools.
Alone, they will not guarantee success.
  • The organization must use the tools, not just
    have them.
  • An effective EMS is alive constantly measuring
performance, making adjustments, and looking for
    opportunities to make continual improvement.
  • This is where teamwork considerations come in.

10
EMS Documentation
  • Effective Writing / Use Of Words
  • Lords Prayer 54 words
  • Ten Commandments 297 words
  • American Declaration of Independence 300 words
  • EEC Directive on Export of Duck Eggs 26,911 words

11
Field Trip Reports
  • Purpose
  • Describe the program with multiple audiences in
mind, but the management audience is primary
  • Collect information that allows a description of
the management system in use for this program
  • Identify imbalance in their PDCA cycle
  • Assess the development of the EMS in the Eco
    Campus model

12
Step 1 Vital Statistics
  • Answer the journalistic questions to define the
    scope of the program
  • Who
  • What
  • When
  • Where
  • Why
  • How
  • Note sources of this information web page, paper
documents, memory of the program manager
  • This should be done before the field trip through
the quiz and on line research

13
Step 2 EMS outline
  • Describe the program in EMS terms
  • Aspect covered
  • Impact measurement
  • Indicator tracking
  • Relative significance of indicators
  • Goals and trends
  • This information will probably come out of the
presentation by the program manager and following
    discussion
  • Again, note the sources of the information

14
Step 3 PDCA overview
  • Organize the program indicators into Plan, Do,
    Check, Act stages
  • Look for scorecard imbalances
  • Probably will request questioning of program
manager and loose interpretation of the stages

15
Step 4 Eco Campus Rating
  • Use the extent of documentation to assess the
stage of development of the EMS on the Ecocampus
    scale
  • May be done on site but more likely in the next
class period during discussion of the program.
  • If we can identify easy ways to improve the
rating, include those in the report.
  • The field trip reporter will lead this
discussion, but the determination will be done by
    the class as a whole.

16
ESF Trip Report
  • Vitals
  • EMS Analysis
  • PDCA Balance
  • Eco Campus Rating
