    popular adult books, within their interest areas.

What?
  • Book Swaps

9-Week Grading Period Project
  • Involved the students in reading, writing and
    performance
  • Students began reading, and they completed
    activities while reading.
  • Students promoted the first book to others by
    completing persuasive project.
  • Students completed a second project after reading
    the second book.

Where?
  • Began in the library
  • Finished in the classroom.

When?
  • . . .last grading period of the school year!

But . . .
  • We began planning in October, when the students
    completed the interest inventories.
  • We applied for and received a small local grant
    for books in the fall.
  • YA Fiction books became the predominate order
    for the year and were ordered by end of December

Why?
  • Empower the students
  • Increase reading for enjoyment purposes
  • Motivate them to read outside their perceived
    interest areas
  • Interest them in a particular author or genre
  • Encourage life-long learning
  • Encourage creativity
  • Promote YA books

  • Worked together 3 periods (about 3 hours)

After the Interest Inventory
  • Reviewed each one with the students
  • The student then selected one of the 3-6 books
    suggested.
  • School library public library purchase
  • Option select your own book
