What is a Pilgrimage?
  • A pilgrimage is a religious holiday or journey.
  • People who go on a pilgrimage are called
    pilgrims.
  • Pilgrims travel to important places associated
    with their religion.

Jerusalem
  • Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.
  • Its name means the city of peace.
  • It is important to Jews Christians and Muslims.
  • Despite being small Jerusalem is one of the most
    popular pilgrimages.

Facts about Jerusalem.
  • The five major areas of pilgrimage to the Holy
    Lands are Church of the Holy Sepulchre, The
    Tomb, The Hill of the Skull, The Garden Tomb and
    the Via Dolorosa.
  • It was the ancient capital of the JEWS and the
    remains of their holy temple is there.
  • For CHRISTIANS it is the place where Jesus Christ
    was crucified.
  • Muslims believe that Mohammed rose into heaven
    from Jerusalem.

  • Rome is the most important place of pilgrimage
    for Roman Catholics.
  • All the Popes live in a palace in Rome called the
    Vatican.
  • The Vatican is classed as an independent country
    called Vatican City.
  • Saint Peters Cathedral is in Rome it is one of
    the largest cathedrals in the world.

Other Important Places for Pilgrimage.
  • Lourdes in France many Catholics believe that
    the Virgin Mary appears here and heals people.
  • Mecca all Muslims try to make the Haaji
    (pilgrimage) to Mecca once in their lifetime.
  • The River Ganges in India is sacred to Hindus.
  • The Golden Temple in Amritsar India is the
    Holiest place for Sikhs.
  • Many protestant Christians do not believe in
    pilgrimages they believe you can worship God
    anywhere.

Modern Secular Pilgrimages.
  • Secular means not religious.
  • Many people today are not religious but still go
    on journeys.
  • Holidays comes from the old term Holy Days.
  • What do you think the difference between a
    religious pilgrimage and going to a Wembley cup
    final or a rock festival like Glastonbury is ?
  • Do you think that something like football or
    shopping is a bit like a religion ?
  • Do you think some pilgrims just went for the
    ride?
